Manchester United’s long-running admiration for Kim Min-jae is set to remain just that – admiration from a distance.

The Bayern Munich centre-back, a player United have tracked since his Napoli days, has made his position clear: he intends to stay in Bavaria and fight for his place, despite not being a guaranteed starter.

United’s defensive planning hits a wall

United are braced for a busy final fortnight of the summer window. A third midfielder is on the agenda to complete the overhaul in the middle of the pitch. A new left-back is being lined up to challenge – and ultimately succeed – Luke Shaw.

Bayern pounced in the summer of 2023, sealing a deal worth up to €58m including add-ons. That move appeared to close the door on Old Trafford. His inconsistent starting role in Munich briefly nudged it back open.

Kim’s answer: Bayern over Old Trafford

According to BILD’s Christian Falk, United’s interest has never gone away. The South Korean remains firmly on their radar and his situation at Bayern is being monitored.

But the key detail lies with the player himself. Falk reports that Kim is “very clear” about his intentions: he wants to stay at Bayern Munich and is content with his current role, even if he is not in Vincent Kompany’s first-choice XI right now.

He believes he can play his way back into the team. Form, rotation, and the inevitability of injuries over a long season all offer a route back into the starting line-up. There is no appetite on his side to force a transfer, no brewing stand-off with the club.

That stance effectively rules out a move to United this summer. With Kim turning 30 in November, the likelihood of a future switch to Old Trafford also fades with each passing window.

Bayern’s quiet victory

For Bayern, Kim’s decision is a significant win. They know they cannot go through a full campaign relying on just two senior centre-backs. A player of his calibre as a third option – or a rotating starter – is exactly the kind of depth required for a serious tilt at the Bundesliga and Champions League.

Keeping him engaged, motivated and onside gives Kompany vital insurance in a season that will stretch every squad.

United, meanwhile, must look elsewhere for Maguire’s long-term heir. The question now is not whether they rate Kim Min-jae. It’s who they turn to next.
