Juventus Goalkeeper Battle: Vicario vs Grabara

Juventus rebuilds its last line of defence with two new faces and one clear message: nobody is safe.

The club moved on from Michele Di Gregorio and Mattia Perin in the last window, then wasted no time reshaping the hierarchy in goal. Guglielmo Vicario arrived on loan from Tottenham, Kamil Grabara on loan from Wolfsburg. Both had been tracked for a while. Both were signed with the belief they could close a problem position in one summer.

On paper, Vicario is the No.1. On the pitch, that status is already under scrutiny.

A shirt that must be earned

Vicario has started well in Turin, settling quickly and justifying the early trust shown in him. But he knows the reality: this is not a job for life. Grabara has come to play, not to watch.

The context matters. Last season, Luciano Spalletti showed he has no hesitation in rotating goalkeepers, sending a clear signal that reputation does not guarantee minutes. If Vicario falters, Spalletti has a ready-made alternative. Grabara can expect chances if errors creep in or form dips, because this staff has already proved it will make tough calls in any position.

For now, Vicario holds the shirt and looks likely to keep it. He has been solid between the posts and gives the back line a sense of calm. But the presence of Grabara changes the dynamic. Every training session is an audition. Every match is a test.

That tension is exactly what Juventus wants.

Two ambitious goalkeepers, both on loan, both aware that their long-term futures are on the line, cannot afford comfort. The competition keeps standards high and gives Spalletti options: he can pick the profile he prefers for each opponent, knowing the other is close behind.

Respect inside the rivalry

Vicario has already addressed the duel, and his words underline the tone inside the dressing room. Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, the Tottenham loanee highlighted Grabara’s pedigree rather than downplaying the threat.

"We all know each other more or less, I remember his great season in the Champions League with Copenhagen. He's a strong, quality goalkeeper. There's healthy competition between us, as it should be."

No mind games. No public posturing. Just recognition that the man trying to take his place is good enough to do it.

Vicario’s aim is clear: stay Spalletti’s preferred option for as long as possible. Grabara’s objective is just as simple: force a rethink. With both keepers chasing the same spot and a coach unafraid to act, Juventus has created a battle that will not fade quietly as the season wears on.

The question now is not whether there will be rotation, but how long Vicario can keep Grabara at arm’s length.
