Juventus Fined €10,000 for Disrupting Mazzola Tribute

Lega Serie A has handed Juventus a €10,000 fine after a section of their supporters disrupted the minute’s silence held in honour of Inter and Italy great Sandro Mazzola.

Mazzola, regarded as one of the finest Italian footballers of all time, died on Saturday at the age of 83. The league ordered a minute’s silence before every Serie A match that weekend, a unified tribute to a player who defined an era.

At the Allianz Stadium in Turin, the silence broke.

Disruption During Tribute

Before kick-off in Juventus’ match against Atalanta, while players from both sides stood in respect, a group of fans in the Curva Sud turned their backs to the pitch. Instead of observing the tribute, they began chanting in memory of some of Juventus’ own club legends, cutting through the atmosphere that was meant to honour Mazzola.

The reaction was swift and fierce. Across Italy, supporters and commentators condemned the behaviour, seeing it as a rare breach of a long-standing unwritten code: when football pauses for one of its greats, rivalry is supposed to pause with it.

Juventus themselves moved quickly. The club issued an official statement almost immediately after the game, publicly distancing itself from the actions of those fans and criticising the lack of respect shown during the tribute.

Lega Serie A has now formalised its response with the €10,000 sanction, underlining that even in one of the most bitter rivalries in Italian football, there are lines that cannot be crossed — especially when the game stops to remember one of its own.
