Julian Alvarez and Diego Simeone's Tense Standoff at Atletico
The mood at the Metropolitano has curdled. What was supposed to be the house Julian Alvarez would lead has become the stage for a bitter stand-off, with reports in Spain claiming Diego Simeone is “absolutely furious” with his star striker.
Alvarez, heavily linked with a shock move to Barcelona, has left his manager feeling betrayed after a season in which Simeone defended him at every turn, even when the goals dried up and the doubts grew.
Simeone’s patience snaps
La Liga commentator Phil Kitromilides lifted the lid on the situation, outlining just how deep the anger runs inside Atletico. Speaking to CBS Sports, he painted a stark picture of a dressing room that has lost faith in its No 9.
“What I’m hearing is that the dressing room is very, very disappointed with him,” Kitromilides said. “And what I’ve been told by someone who knows the situation is that Diego Simeone can’t even look at him. Like, Diego Simeone is furious, absolutely furious with Julian Alvarez. And rightly so.”
That fury is rooted in context. Alvarez went close to four months without scoring last season, a brutal spell for any centre-forward, let alone one billed as the face of a new Atletico era. Simeone never wavered. He shielded him from criticism, backed him in public, and made it clear the former Manchester City forward was central to his long-term vision.
Kitromilides underlined exactly that sense of betrayal.
“This is his guy, this is someone who he defended publicly, consistently, last season, when Alvarez went nearly four months without scoring,” he continued. “He was never questioned by Simeone, never a bad word from Simeone, constantly backed and supported 100 per cent. This is their most important player, their franchise player. The whole project is built around Julian Alvarez.”
When that “franchise player” then pushes for a move, the fallout was always going to be ugly.
Barcelona temptation and missed training
The tension spiked last week when Alvarez missed training sessions, a development that only intensified speculation that he is angling for the Camp Nou. His absence was read as a clear signal: he wants Barcelona.
He did, however, return to work with his teammates on Sunday, a step Atletico hope can mark the beginning of a fragile reset. On the pitch, they still need him. Off it, the relationship looks fractured.
Barcelona, long-term admirers of the Argentine international, have not hidden their interest. But even as they monitor Alvarez’s situation, there is a recognition within the Catalan hierarchy that pulling off a deal in this window is extremely complicated. Atletico have dug in. They do not want to sell, and certainly not now, not like this.
So Barca have started to look elsewhere. The Catalan club are now closing in on a move for Gabriel Jesus from Arsenal, viewed as a more realistic attacking reinforcement than prising Alvarez out of a hostile Madrid.
Atletico cling to ‘normality’
Despite the anger, the missed sessions and the transfer noise, Alvarez is still expected to be named in the squad for Atletico’s upcoming fixture. The club need his goals, his movement, his presence. They are desperate to fold him back into the group, even as Barcelona’s shadow stretches across every conversation.
Inside the Metropolitano offices, the message is one of calm and control. Officials are working hard to project normality, to insist this is just another episode in a long season, not a breaking point.
On the player’s absence and likely return, the club line remains optimistic. Mateu Alemany summed up that stance succinctly: “The plan is very clear. We hope he’ll be back in the team quickly and available for the next LaLiga match.”
The plan might be clear. The emotions are anything but. Now the question is simple: can Simeone and Alvarez coexist long enough for this “franchise player” to justify the faith that built a project around him—or has that bridge already burned?
