Julian Alvarez Returns to Atletico Madrid Squad for Villarreal Clash
Julian Alvarez will be back in the spotlight at Atletico Madrid tonight, named in Diego Simeone’s squad for the La Liga clash with Villarreal after a stormy week dominated by his desire to leave.
The Argentina forward, wanted by Arsenal and pushing for a move to Barcelona, starts on the bench, with Atletico lining up without a recognised centre-forward. His mere presence in the matchday group, though, already feels like a small twist in a saga that has split the fanbase and tested the club’s resolve.
Simeone stands firm – and protective
Simeone had already set the tone on the eve of the game, making it clear Alvarez would be brought back into the fold after sitting out the midweek win over Malaga.
“Julian Alvarez will be in the squad tomorrow,” he said in his press conference. “For me, Julian is an extremely important player for us to achieve our objectives. As long as he’s with the team, I’m going to look after him.”
Those words landed in the middle of a hostile atmosphere. Alvarez trained with the group ahead of Villarreal, but outside the Majadahonda complex the mood turned sour. Fans plastered signs around the training ground reading “JULIAN FUERA” – “JULIAN OUT” – with his No. 19 struck through, a blunt message to a player whose wish to swap Madrid for Barcelona has not been forgiven.
The tension has only been sharpened by reports that Alvarez has already spoken with Mikel Arteta about a move to Arsenal, even if his priority remains Barcelona rather than the Emirates. Atletico, for now, refuse to bend.
Fans revolt, coach defends
The backlash has been loud. Simeone, typically combative, chose instead to shield his player.
“I respect our fans,” he said. “I always have, but I don’t agree with insults or abuse. Every word is being scrutinised by people waiting to create conflict and uncertainty.
“There is no uncertainty. Miguel was very clear. He is our player and we need him.”
The message from the bench to the stands is obvious: as long as Alvarez wears Atletico colours, he will be treated as a key part of the project, regardless of the noise around him.
Simeone had previously justified leaving Alvarez out of the Malaga game by pointing to fitness, not friction. After an extended break following the World Cup, the coach insisted the forward was not ready to feature.
“We don’t believe Julián Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow’s game,” he said at the time. “Hopefully, over these next four days, he’ll make further progress and we’ll be closer to where we want him to be.”
Four days on, he is back in the squad. The physical question seems to have eased. The emotional one has not.
Transfer tension in both directions
While Atletico fight to keep one striker, they are also moving pieces on the market. The club have been heavily linked with Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, who is reported to have “said yes” to a move.
It underlines the delicate balance in the attacking department. Atletico are determined not to lose control of Alvarez’s future, yet they are already positioning themselves for what comes next up front.
For now, though, the scene is set at the Metropolitano. Alvarez is on the bench, his name still on the teamsheet, his number still on the shirt – and an entire fanbase waiting to see whether this is the start of a reconciliation, or just a brief pause before the next explosion in his transfer saga.
