Julián Álvarez Likely to Stay at Atlético de Madrid Despite Barcelona Interest

Julián Álvarez looks increasingly likely to remain an Atlético de Madrid player this summer, even with Barcelona still circling and hoping to drag him to Camp Nou.

The Argentina international has reported back for pre-season with Atlético this week and, according to Cadena SER, has already faced the dressing room. There, he is said to have admitted to his teammates that he “made a mistake” in the way he handled Barcelona’s interest.

It marks a sharp change in tone. During World Cup 2026, Álvarez went public with his desire to leave Atlético, a stance that lit up Barcelona’s hopes of prising him away from Diego Simeone’s side. Barça moved and put an offer on the table.

Atlético’s response was blunt. The club reacted angrily and made it clear they had no intention of selling, shutting the door on any idea of a straightforward negotiation.

Inside the dressing room, Álvarez has now tried to reset the narrative. The report claims he has told his teammates that “his commitment to the shirt is total and that, for however long he has left at Atlético de Madrid, whether it’s a year, three, or two days… the club comes before everything else.”

Barcelona had been waiting to see whether the forward would force the issue and push harder for an exit. That pressure has not arrived. Instead, the feeling around the player has shifted. It is now being reported that Álvarez sees his future “more with Atlético de Madrid than anywhere else.”

For now, his immediate future is on the training pitches of Madrid rather than on a plane. Álvarez has been left out of Atlético’s squad for today’s friendly against Marseille, a decision viewed inside the club as routine given he has only just returned to work and will stay behind to continue training.
