Juan Pezzera Returns to Cairo Amid Transfer Uncertainty
Juan Pezzera is finally on his way back to Cairo. After weeks of tension and silence, Zamalek have set a date for the return of their Brazilian star, drawing a temporary line under a standoff that has dominated their summer.
From title hero to transfer rebel
Pezzera simply stopped coming back.
He refused to report for pre-season, stayed away from the camp, and missed Zamalek’s early matches. The message was blunt: he wanted out after just one season at the White Castle, pushing hard for a move to UAE side Shabab Al-Ahli Dubai.
The Brazilian did not hide it. Reports repeatedly linked him with Shabab Al-Ahli, and every sign from his camp pointed in the same direction – a new adventure in the Gulf, away from the pressure and politics of Cairo.
For Zamalek, it was a jarring twist. Only months earlier, Pezzera had been one of the faces of their resurgence.
Last season he played 44 matches in all competitions, scoring 8 goals and providing 12 assists. He lit up games, stitched attacks together, and drove Zamalek’s push on multiple fronts. His performances helped deliver the Egyptian Premier League title, the first trophy of his spell with the White Knights and a landmark moment for the club’s current project.
Then, almost overnight, the relationship soured.
Return date set – with a bodyguard in tow
The stalemate broke when media figure Karim Ramzy revealed that Pezzera is finally due back. Ramzy announced that the Brazilian will land in Egypt this Saturday afternoon.
On his official Facebook page, Ramzy wrote: “Juan Pezzera arrives in Cairo at four o'clock this afternoon.. and Pezzera is bringing with him to Cairo four people, including a personal bodyguard”.
The detail was striking. A player returning from absence, flanked by a small entourage and a bodyguard, underlined just how heated this saga has become.
His comeback to Cairo does not mean the story is over. It only moves it to a new chapter.
Pezzera has been missing from training, absent from the dressing room, and firmly outside the group’s preparations. Now he is physically returning, but his future in this transfer window remains unresolved.
Zamalek wait for an answer
Inside the club, the question is simple: does he stay or does he go?
On the pitch, the case for keeping him is obvious. A creative force, a title winner, and a proven influence in big games. Last season’s numbers – 8 goals and 12 assists – are not easily replaced, especially in a squad still rebuilding.
Off the pitch, the situation is far more complicated. A player who pushed to skip pre-season and openly chased a move to Shabab Al-Ahli has to repair trust, not just with the board and coaching staff, but with a fanbase that celebrated him only a few months ago.
For now, Zamalek’s supporters are left in limbo. They know he is back in Cairo. They know he has not yet given a final answer on his future.
Will he walk back into training and reintegrate with the squad? Or will his arrival in Egypt simply be a brief stop before a transfer to Shabab Al-Ahli is finally pushed over the line?
