John Obi Mikel Backs Adam Wharton for Manchester United Move

John Obi Mikel has nailed his colours to the mast over Adam Wharton – and he’s painted them Manchester United red.

The former Chelsea midfielder, speaking on his podcast, could hardly have been more glowing about the Crystal Palace starlet.

“I love him! I love Adam Wharton, I'm a big, big fan,” Obi Mikel said, before going a step further with a bold prediction about the 22-year-old’s future.

“I think he's going to go places, though, I think next season he will leave Crystal Palace. I think they want to keep him for one more season. I see him going to Manchester United next season.”

Wharton, valued at around £60 million by Transfermarkt, stayed at Selhurst Park throughout the summer window despite heavy interest from across the Premier League. United were among the clubs tracking him, but they never pushed that admiration into a formal bid.

Instead, INEOS chose a different route for Michael Carrick’s midfield rebuild.

Andrey Santos, Carlos Baleba and Youri Tielemans arrived, with an upfront outlay of £148m reshaping the engine room and closing off any immediate need for another central midfielder of Wharton’s profile.

That shift has real consequences for Obi Mikel’s prediction.

United move unlikely for Wharton – for now

For all the excitement around Wharton’s rise, those inside Old Trafford no longer see him as a concrete target.

The money has already gone into the middle of the pitch. The next phase of INEOS’ project is expected to move away from midfield and lock onto the defence, an area left untouched in the most recent window.

That decision has raised eyebrows. United chose not to add a single defender to Carrick’s squad, despite the return of Champions League football and the obvious risk that one serious injury at the back could derail the season.

It’s a gamble. A big one.

But it also underlines why another major midfield signing – even one as highly regarded as Wharton – sits low on the list.

Eyes on Lewis Hall and life after Luke Shaw

Inside the club, the long-term plan is already being sketched out. As things stand, United’s priority signing for 2027 is believed to be Lewis Hall.

He is viewed as the ideal successor to Luke Shaw, who is now 31 and entering the final nine months of his contract at Old Trafford.

That timeline tells its own story. INEOS are thinking about the next defensive cycle, not the next £60m midfielder.

Wharton may yet outgrow Crystal Palace and take the next step that Obi Mikel so confidently predicts. The question is whether that step leads him through the doors at Carrington – or whether United’s new regime has already moved on to a very different blueprint.
