Joao Pedro Named Player of the Month: A New Era for Chelsea

He edged out team‑mate Cole Palmer for the award, a detail that underlines just how sharp and decisive he has been in a side packed with attacking talent.

Those numbers tell part of the story. The rest has been about presence. Pedro has attacked the opening weeks with a ruthless edge that Chelsea fans have been waiting years to see from their centre-forward.

Cornerstone of a new Chelsea

This form is not arriving in a vacuum. Pedro has already tied his future to Stamford Bridge, signing a long-term contract that runs until 2034. That commitment has changed the conversation around him. He is no longer just another promising piece in a sprawling rebuild; he is the reference point.

Alonso’s bold comparison

Alonso is not shy about where he believes his striker now sits in the Premier League hierarchy. Asked whether Pedro can genuinely be compared to Erling Haaland – last season’s Golden Boot winner with 27 league goals – the Chelsea boss didn’t hesitate.

"I would say yes. If you count how many top strikers we have in the Premier League, I'm sure that Joao [Pedro] is there, Haaland for sure is there. So I would rate him that way," he said.

Haaland is often framed as the purest form of penalty-box finisher: ruthless, direct, devastating in the area. Alonso sees Pedro differently. For him, the Brazilian brings a wider canvas, a forward who can colour every zone of the pitch.

The coach reached back to his Real Madrid days for the closest parallel: Karim Benzema, a Ballon d'Or winner and one of the most complete forwards of his generation. That is the level of reference Alonso is willing to use.

"In many things he reminds me of Benzema, because he is good in the box, he is good out of the box, he is good coming to his left side, he is good with the head, he is very complete, he is intelligent," Alonso said. "So yes, he is still young, still things to develop, but many, many absolutely outstanding qualities that he has."

Pedro’s versatility backs up the comparison. He has operated as a midfielder, dropped into the No 10 role and worked from wide areas. Each role has sharpened a different edge of his game. For modern defences that want clear reference points, he is a problem that keeps changing shape.

From World Cup pain to international recall

This surge in club form comes off the back of a brutal international setback. Pedro was a surprise omission from Brazil’s World Cup squad in the summer, a decision that cut deep and could have derailed his momentum.

Instead, it seems to have hardened him.

He has forced his way back into the national conversation and earned a recall for the September international window, with Brazil set to face New Zealand and India. That turnaround has not come from any grand motivational speech from his manager.

"He had enough motivation. He already had enough within him, so I didn't need to go there. It was painful for him, but that is in the past. We are now focused on what he is doing well and what he can do better," Alonso insisted.

The Chelsea boss highlighted more than just goals and assists. He pointed to Pedro’s personality, maturity and hunger as the foundations of this run.

"He has been outstanding. Not just in football terms, but in his personality, his maturity and his desire. He has a very clear goal this season, which is to have a great campaign and score a lot of goals."

The award in August is only the first marker. With a long contract signed, a manager backing him to share a table with Haaland and echoes of Benzema in his all-round play, Joao Pedro now faces a different kind of pressure: to turn a hot month into a defining season.
