JJ Gabriel’s Future in Doubt as ‘Kid Messi’ Considers Leaving United
JJ Gabriel’s rapid rise has hit its first serious crossroads.
The 15-year-old Manchester United forward, long tagged ‘Kid Messi’ from his early days in London academies, has asked for his club registration at Carrington to be cancelled – a move that has jolted both United and England’s youth set-up.
His request has triggered immediate interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are all monitoring the situation, sensing an opening around one of England’s most talked-about teenagers.
Now England’s youth coaches must decide whether to step back.
Telegraph Sport reports that Football Association staff are currently weighing up if Gabriel is in the right physical condition and mental state to join up with the national youth squads for the upcoming window. The talent is not in doubt. The timing is.
Gabriel turns 16 on October 6, a landmark birthday that has only sharpened the uncertainty around his next contract. While that plays out in the background, the forward has not trained at Carrington since last week and has already missed Manchester United Under-21 fixtures.
England staff would prefer to have him involved. They see a versatile, high-ceiling attacker who has already shown he can handle older age groups. But there is agreement on one point: his well-being comes first. The FA remains in close contact with his representatives as they try to navigate what is being treated as a sensitive, delicate situation.
There is, at least, no qualification jeopardy attached to the call. Below Under-21 level, England’s youth sides are only scheduled to play non-competitive fixtures during this international window, so any decision to leave Gabriel out will not impact official campaigns.
The potential omission comes just as Gabriel’s stock had rocketed again on the pitch. The London-born forward hit a hat-trick for United in the UEFA Youth League last week, another statement performance to add to his growing catalogue. He already has caps for England at Under-17, Under-16 and Under-15 level, having climbed the ladder at speed.
His international future, though, is not tied solely to the Three Lions. Gabriel is also eligible for the Republic of Ireland through his father and Cyprus through his mother. He has already shown he is willing to make bold calls at youth level, having previously turned down an England Under-16 call-up in August 2025 to focus on his club development.
That blend of rapid progression and multi-national eligibility explains why Europe’s elite are circling. A teenager good enough to dominate in the UEFA Youth League, already blooded across several England age groups, and potentially open to a new pathway is a rare market opportunity.
For now, the expectation is that Gabriel will stay out of competitive action while talks continue over his Carrington registration. The upcoming international window, with no pressing qualifiers at stake for his age bracket, gives all parties some breathing space to negotiate without the noise of immediate matchdays.
United, for their part, insist the situation is still salvageable. They believe there is a route back for Gabriel, even as rival clubs ramp up their interest and the clock ticks towards his 16th birthday.
The next few weeks will be decisive. Does ‘Kid Messi’ resolve his future at Old Trafford and return to England duty – or does this standoff mark the start of a very different journey across Europe?
