Across England and Spain, reports align on one key detail: Gabriel is in Barcelona with his family, sounding out a potential new life. Not just a new club. A new home.
Sky Sports go a step further, describing talks with Barcelona as “advanced”. Real Madrid are said to be in a similarly strong position. Bayern Munich and PSG have also been heavily linked, but the sense from Spain is clear – the two La Liga giants currently hold the upper hand.
Bayern in the race – and keeping quiet
In Germany, Bild report that Bayern moved early. According to their information, the Bundesliga champions have been in contact with Gabriel and his camp since February.
Bastian Wernscheid, assistant to board member for sport Max Eberl, is said to be heavily involved in the pursuit, with a personal meeting already taking place. Bayern are clearly serious.
Publicly, though, they are saying almost nothing.
Sporting director Christoph Freund stayed firmly on script when questioned on Friday. “I do not talk about players who are under contract at other clubs. We know the player because he is very, very talented – an exceptional talent. But I cannot say any more about it,” he said, while denying any current exchange with the player’s side.
The message: admiration, yes. Confirmation, no.
The rulebook problem – and the passport loophole
Any club hoping to prise Gabriel away faces more than just competition. They face the regulations.
As an English player, Gabriel would generally only be allowed to join a European club and play there professionally from his 18th birthday. That restriction bites just as hard for Real Madrid and Barcelona as it does for anyone else.
There is, however, a potential workaround.
Gabriel’s father is from Ireland and his mother has Cypriot roots. That opens the door to an EU passport, which could change the landscape entirely and smooth a move to the continent long before he turns 18.
If that happens, the scramble for his signature will only intensify.
Why United are losing a “super talent”
The bigger question for many in England is a brutal one: how have Manchester United allowed it to reach this point?
According to the Telegraph, Gabriel no longer sees his future at Old Trafford. The report claims he has gone as far as asking for his registration with the club to be cancelled – a move described as causing “shock” inside United and being “almost unprecedented”.
This is not a fringe academy player forcing the issue. Gabriel is one of the standout prospects of his age group.
He joined United at 11. Last season, he scored 23 goals in 23 Under-18 matches, a ruthless return that earned him the Under-18 Premier League’s best player award. In August, he stepped into the history books, making his professional debut and becoming the youngest first-team player in United’s history.
He has kept backing up the hype. On his UEFA Youth League debut, he hit a hat-trick in a 5-0 home win over Sabah, underlining again why Europe’s elite are circling.
Then came another telling move off the pitch: after that game, the Telegraph report that Gabriel removed all Manchester United-related posts from his social media accounts.
For United, it is a jarring sight – a record-breaking academy star, already looking beyond Old Trafford, while Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern and PSG wait to see where the next step in his remarkable rise will be taken.
