JJ Gabriel's Future: Barcelona Awaits as Man Utd Registration Row Intensifies
JJ Gabriel’s future has moved out of Manchester and into mainland Europe.
The 15-year-old forward, one of Manchester United’s most highly regarded prospects, has travelled to Barcelona as a cluster of European giants jostle for position in the race to sign him, with the teenager having told United he wants his registration cancelled with immediate effect.
Real Madrid have already registered strong interest, while Bayern Munich, Paris St-Germain and Barcelona are all in the frame. Gabriel left the UK on Thursday, initially heading to France, and is now in Barcelona as the tug-of-war around his next move gathers pace.
Registration row and EU route
United’s stance on his registration is pivotal. If the club decide to retain it, Gabriel would be blocked from joining another English side until the end of the season.
There is, however, a potential escape route. Gabriel could obtain a European Union passport through his father, a former Republic of Ireland international, or his mother, who has Greek-Cypriot heritage. That would open the door for him to join a club in the EU once he turns 16 on 6 October.
The timing matters. Any European move hinges on that birthday and the paperwork behind it.
Fallout after Youth League hat-trick
Gabriel has not trained with United since 10 September, the night he announced himself in Europe with a hat-trick on his Uefa Youth League debut. Those goals underlined why so many clubs are circling.
But the same competition has now become a barrier. Uefa Youth League rules mean he cannot play for another team in this season’s tournament, even if he leaves United.
Tension spiked around the club’s Champions League opener against Sabah FK, which Michael Carrick’s side won 4-0. Sources close to Gabriel were furious he was not registered for the matchday squad, a decision that has fed into the growing sense of frustration around his situation.
Carrick calls for calm
Carrick faced fresh questions about Gabriel at his Friday news conference ahead of Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Fulham. The United manager chose his words carefully.
"He's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important we don't play anything out here," he said. "With the exposure and scrutiny and everything, you got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything.
"The situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's OK is the important thing."
On the pitch, Gabriel has started the season brightly. He scored in each of his first two Premier League 2 appearances for United, but he will play no part against Brentford at Leigh Sports Village on Friday.
So the goals have paused. The speculation has not. With his 16th birthday looming and Europe’s elite on alert, the next decision in JJ Gabriel’s young career will echo far beyond Manchester.
