JJ Gabriel in Talks with Barcelona Amid Man Utd Exit

Manchester United’s latest teenage prodigy is already slipping towards the door – and some of Europe’s biggest clubs are holding it open.

JJ Gabriel, just 15, is in Barcelona with his representatives for talks over a potential move to the Catalan giants, as the battle to sign one of the most coveted youngsters in Europe intensifies.

United want him to stay. The reality is starting to look very different.

From hat-trick hero to de-registration request

Gabriel’s situation escalated at remarkable speed.

Last Thursday, he lit up the UEFA Youth League with a hat-trick in a 5-0 win over Sabah. It should have been the kind of night that cements a teenager’s place in a club’s long-term plans.

Instead, after that game, Gabriel and his camp formally requested that he be de-registered by United.

Since then, he has not trained with the club.

At the same time, he was left out of all England youth squads announced on Friday, despite having represented his country at U17 level most recently. For a player of his profile, that absence did not go unnoticed.

European giants circle

The queue for Gabriel is not a quiet one.

Premier League clubs are watching closely. So are Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich. For a 15-year-old, it is an extraordinary market.

United still hope to convince him to remain at Old Trafford. He is under contract until the end of the season, and senior figures at the club are keen to keep him in their pathway.

But as the interest grows and negotiations in Barcelona take place, the sense is that the momentum is moving away from Manchester.

The FIFA loophole and a crucial birthday

The timing is no coincidence.

Gabriel turns 16 on October 6. There is a belief, based on existing precedent and a FIFA loophole, that he could leave United for a club in Europe once he reaches that age if he secures a European passport through either of his parents.

Any transfer would still require FIFA approval, so nothing is guaranteed. Yet the possibility alone has emboldened suitors and placed United under pressure they can do little to control.

Carrick urges caution over young star

United head coach Michael Carrick addressed the situation on Friday, choosing his words carefully and stressing the need to protect a teenager suddenly under intense scrutiny.

“I think he's a young boy, JJ, and I think it's important that we certainly don't play anything out here,” Carrick said.

“I think the exposure and the scrutiny and everything, you've got to be careful and be sensible and think of him as much as anything, so the situation will work itself out, whatever way it's going to work itself out. Making sure he's okay is the important thing.”

Carrick’s message was clear: the human being comes before the headline.

‘Unbelievable talent’ – and a potential hammer blow

Outside the club, the reaction is very different. Less cautious. More blunt.

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson did not hide his admiration for Gabriel – or his concern for United if they lose him.

“First of all, he's an unbelievable talent,” Merson said.

He pointed to the rapid opportunities being handed to other top English youngsters.

“When you're watching Max Dowman at Arsenal and Rio Ngumoha getting given a chance at Liverpool and doing very well, he's probably thinking, 'I should be playing at Man Utd now as well'.”

That, Merson argued, is the modern reality.

“This is the problem you're going to have with the kids of this day and age. They're so talented that they want to play straight away. When I was playing, it was unheard of at 16.

“It'll be a massive blow for Man Utd. Believe me, this kid is an unbelievable talent. They'll have every club in the world wanting him.”

The demand is already there. The talks have already started.

Now the question is simple: can Manchester United still convince JJ Gabriel that his future belongs at Old Trafford, or has one of the club’s brightest prospects already slipped beyond their reach?
