Jim McGuinness Retains Role as Donegal Senior Football Manager Through 2027
Jim McGuinness will stay on as Donegal senior football manager through the 2027 season, extending one of the most compelling modern stories in inter-county football.
Donegal GAA confirmed on Monday evening that McGuinness has been retained for a further year, which will be his fourth season in charge in this second spell at the helm. The county also rubber-stamped a new two-year term for Mickey McCann as senior hurling manager, keeping him in the role he has held since 2018.
The announcement followed a meeting of the County Committee, after which Donegal GAA stated that Michael McCann has been appointed senior hurling manager for a two-year term and Jim McGuinness senior football manager for a one-year term.
McGuinness’s return has already reshaped Donegal’s trajectory. Since coming back on a three-year deal with an option of a fourth, the 53-year-old has delivered back-to-back Ulster titles in 2024 and 2025 and brought the county to an All-Ireland final in 2025.
Earlier this year, Donegal also claimed the Football League Division One title, beating Kerry in the final in March and signalling that they could again live with the elite.
Championship, though, told a different story.
Donegal exited the Ulster SFC at the quarter-final stage after a defeat to Down, then fell to Dublin after extra-time in Round 3 of the All-Ireland series, a loss that underlined how far they still have to travel to regain the summit.
McGuinness, who famously led Donegal to All-Ireland glory in 2012 during his first stint in charge, now heads into 2027 with the security of that optional fourth year activated and a clear challenge in front of him: turn league promise and provincial dominance back into September silverware.
