Jeremie Jacquet: Liverpool's New Defensive Star

Liverpool have barely had time to miss Ibrahima Konate – because his replacement has arrived at full speed.

Jeremie Jacquet, signed from Rennes as the long-term solution to Konate’s departure, has wasted no time convincing Anfield he belongs. At 21, and dropped straight into a side in transition, he has not just coped. He has stood out.

Konate’s exit to Real Madrid on a free last summer left a sizeable hole. He had grown into a key figure in the Premier League, his performances often setting the tone for Liverpool’s back line. Filling that void was never going to be simple.

Yet within weeks of Jacquet’s arrival, the local reaction told its own story. The young French defender has been collecting plaudits at a rate that would make a seasoned veteran blush.

The Liverpool Echo highlighted his display against Fulham last Saturday, picking him out as one of the very few who could leave Anfield with any real pride. In a flat team performance, his composure and authority jumped off the pitch.

“The most distinctive thing about Jacquet is his calm nerves,” the paper noted, underlining how quickly he has settled despite the turbulence around him. To slot into a reshaped Liverpool side and shoulder the responsibility of compensating for Konate at just 21, it said, was a “remarkable achievement”.

The verdict went further. The Echo argued that Jacquet is already ahead of Konate at the same age and suggested he has “all the makings of a great player” based on what he has shown so far.

That theme has echoed across the fanbase. This is Anfield pointed out that Jacquet’s influence stretches beyond the basics of defending. He has contributed going forward, offering more on the ball than the midfield pairing of Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai in recent outings.

His calm use of possession has become a key feature. Since Konate’s departure, Liverpool had lacked that sense of assurance from deep, the defender willing to take the ball, absorb pressure and play. Jacquet has stepped into that role with striking ease.

It has not taken long for him to move from “new signing” to “undroppable”. And if this is only the beginning, Liverpool may have found their next defensive cornerstone far sooner than anyone expected.
