James Ward-Prowse Returns to Southampton

James Ward-Prowse is back where it all began.

Southampton have re-signed their former captain from Championship rivals West Ham United, bringing the 31-year-old home to St Mary’s on a two-year deal worth just under £1m.

It is a modest fee for a player who has come to define the modern Southampton story. Ward-Prowse first walked into the club as an eight-year-old, rose through the academy and went on to make 410 first-team appearances before leaving in 2023 for West Ham.

Now the circle closes.

“It feels a bit surreal,” Ward-Prowse admitted. “The last couple of days have been pretty intense, but I'm delighted to be back, and to be wearing the red and white again is truly special.

“It's the place I call home, obviously having come through the academy since I was eight. It was an incredible journey up until the point that I left, but home is a special place and I always had it in the back of my mind that it was somewhere that I wanted to be.

“I'm here today very excited and looking forward to the challenge ahead.”

His year away from the south coast has been busy. Ward-Prowse made 75 appearances for West Ham and took in two loan spells, first at Nottingham Forest and then at Burnley, where he played 14 times last season.

The numbers he left behind at Southampton still carry weight. Across his first spell, he scored 55 goals and supplied 52 assists. Seventeen of those goals came from Premier League free-kicks, leaving him just one behind David Beckham’s all-time top-flight record of 18.

That dead-ball threat, coupled with his engine and leadership, helped him into the England squad, where he has earned 11 caps and scored twice.

Now he returns not as a promising academy graduate, but as a seasoned international, a set-piece specialist and a figurehead for a club trying to write its next chapter.
