Jack Moylan Shines in Cardiff's 3-1 Championship Victory
Jack Moylan announced himself to the Cardiff faithful in style, firing a brilliant brace to deliver their first Championship win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Charlton.
The summer signing from Lincoln, previously of Shelbourne and Bohemians, ripped into the game from the first whistle. Eight minutes in, he struck. The Republic of Ireland forward found the opener, settling nerves inside a stadium that had grown restless after seven league games without a win since promotion from League One.
Cardiff didn’t just build on it, they surged.
On 24 minutes, Moylan turned creator. Drifting into space, he picked out Yousef Salech, who finished to put Brian Barry-Murphy’s side firmly in control and give shape to a performance that had been threatening to click for weeks.
Charlton, though, refused to fold. Tyreece Campbell dragged them back into the contest, trimming the deficit and testing Cardiff’s fragile confidence. This was the point in recent weeks when doubt had crept in.
Not this time.
Barry-Murphy’s players hit back almost immediately, reasserting their grip and continuing to carve out chances. The response delighted the Cardiff boss.
“I was particularly pleased with the response to conceding the goal because that was obviously a test for us,” he said. “We bounced back pretty much straight away and kept creating good chances. In the second half, I felt as if we ran out deserving winners.”
The game’s defining moment arrived just after the hour. Moylan collected the ball on the edge of the area, sized up his options and unleashed a stunning strike to make it 3-1 and kill Charlton’s resistance. It was the kind of finish that turns a good debut season into something more.
Barry-Murphy has never hidden his belief in the 22-year-old’s ceiling, and this display underlined why Cardiff moved for him.
“We felt as if we were bringing a player who would improve the squad when we bought Jack Moylan. He has qualities we probably didn’t have before,” the manager said. “He’s a very dangerous player in the situations you saw him in today.
“The big appeal for us was because of where he’s come from, he has a lot of improvement in him. The way he’s working means he will improve a lot and become a great player for the club.”
For Barry-Murphy, the result also validated weeks of insisting performances were better than results suggested.
“It was a very important game for us,” he admitted. “We felt as if we’d been playing reasonably well and we have to do it again. We knew today’s game was going to be tough, but we played a great game, created really good chances and we took enough of them to win.
“You don’t always get what you feel you deserve. We were clear with the players that there were certain games where we weren’t at our best, but we had full belief that if we kept playing the way we were playing and managed to score the goals we felt we would, we could win the game.”
Cardiff finally have that win. More importantly, they look to have found a new talisman in Moylan – and a sharper edge to the football Barry-Murphy always believed would keep them up.
