Inter Milan Eyes Federico Chiesa as Luis Henrique Replacement
Inter Milan have already taken one player from Liverpool this week. They may not be finished yet.
Curtis Jones completed his move to San Siro on Friday, a deal that could rise to £30 million and draw a firm line under his time at Anfield. The 25-year-old becomes the latest Premier League export to Serie A, but Inter’s gaze has stayed fixed on Merseyside.
They want another Red.
Chiesa on Inter’s radar
Federico Chiesa, now 28, arrived at Liverpool in 2024 from Juventus for around £12.5m. On paper, it looked a smart piece of business: a Euro 2020 winner, proven in Serie A, on a relatively modest fee for a club of Liverpool’s size.
The reality has been far more subdued.
Chiesa has struggled to carve out a regular role on the wing, despite reportedly earning wages in the region of £150,000 per week. He leaves Anfield with a Premier League winner’s medal, but not with the influence he would have imagined when he swapped Turin for Merseyside.
His status under Andoni Iraola has only underlined that point. Preseason has not changed the picture. Chiesa has not convinced the new Liverpool boss and now looks poised to move on, provided Liverpool’s valuation is met.
That’s where Inter come back into the story.
Luis Henrique out, Chiesa in?
Inter are preparing to sell Brazilian forward Luis Henrique to Roma in a deal expected to reach around €25m. That sale would free up both space and funds for Cristian Chivu to reshape his attacking options.
According to Inter-focused reporter Fabio Bergomi, Chiesa has moved to the front of the queue.
“Chiesa could be the one who goes in place of Luis Henrique, if Luis Henrique accepts Roma, as seems to be the case,” Bergomi told his YouTube audience, before sharpening the point even further.
“So I would narrow it down to Chiesa, because perhaps in the end they close Chiesa and he is plausible.”
Inter see him not as a guaranteed starter, but as a squad player with pedigree, someone who can rotate across the front line and bring experience to a group that continues to evolve under Chivu.
A Liverpool stint that never caught fire
The numbers tell the story. Last season, under Arne Slot, Chiesa managed only two Premier League starts. He failed to seize either opportunity in a way that would force himself into the manager’s long-term plans.
His absence from training in the build-up to Liverpool’s season opener against Newcastle has only heightened speculation over his future. But that particular detail is understood to be injury-related rather than a direct result of any transfer negotiations.
Even so, the direction of travel feels clear. Liverpool are open to a sale. Inter are circling. The player needs a reset.
Having already prised Jones away from Anfield, Inter now have the chance to complete a striking double raid: a homecoming of sorts for Chiesa back to Serie A, and a fresh chapter for a Euro 2020 winner whose Liverpool story never truly began.
