Inter Milan Secures £30m Deal for Djed Spence

Inter Milan have agreed a £30m deal to sign England defender Djed Spence from Tottenham, closing in on a move that reshapes the right flank for both clubs.

The agreement, understood to include a 10 per cent sell-on clause, comes after the full-back was granted permission to travel to Italy for a medical while talks between the clubs continued. Those negotiations have now produced a total package worth £30m.

Spence, one of the standout performers in England’s run to third place at this summer’s World Cup, has faced a familiar problem at Spurs: too many bodies, not enough minutes. Pedro Porro is firmly established as first-choice right-back, while Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies can all operate on the left, squeezing his path to regular football.

Inter, by contrast, have been hunting for a fresh option at right wing-back. After failing to find a breakthrough in talks for Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby, they switched focus to Spence and moved quickly once it became clear a deal could be done.

The 24-year-old still had three years left on his Tottenham contract, with an option for a further season, but is understood to be keen on the switch. His appetite for Serie A was sharpened by a positive six-month loan spell at Genoa from January 2024, a stint that reminded clubs across Europe of his pace and one‑v‑one defending.

Tottenham signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m, paying an initial £12.5m. From a business standpoint, they now more than double that outlay. From a football standpoint, it feels more complicated.

Sky Sports News reporter Mark McAdam summed up the mixed emotions around the move, noting that Spurs fans have “seen his brilliance in flashes” and watched him shine on the biggest stage with England. The fee may look healthy on paper, but for a player with that ceiling, some inside the fanbase will feel it is on the low side.

What is clear is that Tottenham have not been caught cold. McAdam revealed the club have already been preparing for Spence’s exit and have “irons in the fire” as they line up a replacement for the departing full-back.

Inter get their wing-back. Spurs get their money and a decision made. The real verdict will come when Spence pulls on the black and blue and shows whether this is the move that finally unlocks his prime.
