Hull City Break Transfer Record for Nobel Mendy

Hull City have ripped up their own transfer history to land Senegal defender Nobel Mendy from Rayo Vallecano on a long-term deal.

The 21-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at the MKM Stadium, with the club holding an option for a further year, in a move that eclipses the fee paid for new goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis earlier this month.

No figure has been disclosed, but Hull have confirmed the deal goes beyond the £20m plus add-ons they agreed with Olympiacos for Greece international Tzolakis. That instantly wipes out a transfer record that had stood since 2016, when £13m was spent on Ryan Mason from Tottenham.

This is a different Hull. And Mendy knows it.

"I am very happy to be here and very proud to be here as well," the defender said after completing the move. "I am a very athletic player, and I am a defender at heart. I also really enjoy the game and coming out from the back cleanly and aggressively when needed.

"I have wanted to play in the Premier League since I was little, so it's a great challenge to face and I am ready for it."

Mendy arrives on the back of a rapid rise through European football. He began his career at Paris FC before earning his chance in Spain, where he spent last season in La Liga with Rayo Vallecano.

There he scored twice in 28 appearances in all competitions and ended the campaign on a major stage, starting in the Conference League final defeat by Crystal Palace. The year before, he had also reached the same competition’s final with Real Betis, only to lose to Chelsea.

On the international front, Mendy made his Senegal debut in March, winning his first cap against The Gambia.

Hull’s decision to break their transfer record twice in the same window, and to do it on a 21-year-old centre-back, underlines where they see their future. The question now is simple: can Mendy grow quickly enough to anchor a defence in the league he has dreamed about since he was a child?
