Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg Stripped of Marseille Captaincy Amid Transfer Turmoil

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been stripped of the Marseille captaincy after refusing a move to Newcastle United, triggering a power struggle behind the scenes at the Ligue 1 club.

The Danish midfielder has been a key figure for Marseille, but his reluctance to join Newcastle has infuriated owner Frank McCourt, who was ready to cash in. Newcastle manager Matthias Jaissle had identified Hojbjerg as the man to step into the void left by Bruno Guimaraes, and sporting director Ross Wilson has been driving the deal from Tyneside.

Marseille were prepared to accept an offer of around £15 million from Newcastle. On the club’s side, the path was clear. On the player’s side, it was anything but. Hojbjerg is not keen on the move, and that stance has come at a cost.

The armband has gone.

Captaincy removed, tension revealed

Hojbjerg started for Marseille against Atletico Madrid yesterday and completed the match, but the most telling detail came before kick-off. The captain’s armband, once his, was handed instead to Timothy Weah.

The decision did not come from the dugout.

Marseille head coach Bruno Genesio made that plain in a blunt post-match briefing. "It is a decision that was dictated to me by the club's management," he told reporters on Friday.

He did not hide his frustration.

"If I want to be completely frank, and I will be, it is not a decision that I agree with. "But I am an employee, I have to comply with certain obligations. We did it."

Those few lines laid bare the fault lines at Marseille: a coach wanting to keep authority over his dressing room, an ownership determined to push through a transfer, and a senior player caught in the middle, unwilling to move.

Newcastle turn to other targets

With Hojbjerg standing firm, Newcastle are now expected to look elsewhere. From their perspective, forcing through a move for a player who does not want to come makes little sense, especially in a key midfield role.

Attention has already shifted to Joao Palhinha. Newcastle have put a three-year contract on the table for the Bayern Munich midfielder as they search for steel and presence in the centre of the pitch.

Again, though, resistance.

Palhinha’s preference is Aston Villa, leaving Newcastle battling on two fronts in the market and short of willing replacements for Guimaraes.

Marseille, meanwhile, must live with a captaincy call imposed from above and a star midfielder whose future – and status – now hangs in the balance.
