Harry Kane Considers NFL Future While Planning MLS Move
Harry Kane, the Bayern Munich striker and England captain, opened up about his plans after retiring from professional football. Ahead of England's UEFA Nations League match against Spain, he revealed that a future move to Major League Soccer (MLS) might lead to a second career as an NFL placekicker within five or six years.
Kane's Vision Beyond His Bayern Peak
The 33-year-old forward, fresh off scoring 73 goals in a season and currently a top contender for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, spoke to reporters at St George's Park. Instead of focusing solely on the upcoming clash with World Cup champions Spain, Kane shared his long-term ambitions, which include possibly combining soccer with American football later in life.
Soccer-to-NFL Transition Already Seen in Practice
Kane believes his penalty-taking skills could translate well into NFL placekicking. He cited Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, who was once drafted by Toronto FC in MLS, as an example of a successful switch from soccer to American football. Additionally, former Tottenham striker Clive Allen played for the London Monarchs in NFL Europe, offering another example. Kane's precise finishing and penalty record, along with his admiration for quarterback Tom Brady, lend credibility to this unusual crossover.
Kane Comments on the Feasibility of the NFL Route
"Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two maybe with the seasons," Kane said, as reported by The Athletic. "That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously. It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let's put it that way."
He also explained the technical similarities: "I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure, technique. If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than any other sport. If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take maybe six months to a year of trying to practice before."
Current Focus on Bayern and England Before Any Switch
Kane emphasized that this idea is still far off while he's performing at a high level in Europe. "If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had," he said. At 33, he aims to make the most of his remaining peak years.
This isn't a new thought for Kane; back in 2019, he mentioned to ESPN a possible NFL timeline spanning 10 to 12 years. Now, with contract talks advancing at Bayern and MLS seen as a likely destination later in his career, the concept of pursuing both sports seems more connected than ever.
