Harry Kane Leads English Charge for 2026 Ballon d'Or

Harry Kane will lead a powerful English charge for the 2026 Men’s Ballon d’Or after being named among the favourites for the game’s most coveted individual prize.

The Bayern Munich striker headlines a 30-man shortlist that also includes Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice, as the ceremony comes to London for the first time on 26 October.

Kane leads English push for Ballon d’Or

Kane goes into the vote as the bookmakers’ frontrunner. The numbers explain why. He hit a staggering 73 goals in 65 games for club and country last season, driving Bayern to another Bundesliga title and captaining England to a World Cup bronze medal.

No Englishman has lifted the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. Kane, now 33, stands on the brink of ending a 25-year wait.

Standing in his way is a heavyweight cast. Holder Ousmane Dembele returns to defend his crown, with Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, Lamine Yamal, Rodri and Kylian Mbappe all in the mix for the award that will be handed out at the London Palladium.

Lionel Messi is again included on the list, but Cristiano Ronaldo is absent, a stark marker of a new era in the game’s individual honours race.

Premier League well represented

Rice is one of several current Premier League names in contention. Bruno Fernandes, Gabriel, Erling Haaland and William Saliba all make the cut as England’s top flight flexes its muscle on the global stage.

Arsenal’s resurgence under Mikel Arteta is recognised beyond the playing squad. Arteta himself is nominated for Men’s Coach of the Year, alongside Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, Spain boss Luis De La Fuente, Vincent Kompany and Luis Enrique. Arsenal are also shortlisted for Men’s Club of the Year.

Between the posts, Cape Verde’s Vozinha is among the contenders for Men’s Goalkeeper of the Year after his standout World Cup displays. He lines up against Arsenal’s David Raya and Emiliano Martinez, now at Chelsea, in a strong goalkeeping field.

Yamal tops young talent list

Lamine Yamal, already a headline name despite his age, tops the Men’s Young Talent of the Year shortlist.

He is joined by Bournemouth forward Junior Kroupi, Manchester City’s new signing Ayyoub Bouaddi and recent Aston Villa recruit Johan Manzambi. On the women’s side, Chelsea’s Veerle Buurman earns a nomination for the young talent accolade.

A landmark year for the Ballon d’Or

This edition marks the 70th anniversary of the Ballon d’Or, created by France Football and, since 2024, co-organised with UEFA.

For the first time, the gala leaves Paris and crosses the Channel to London. The move is a deliberate nod to the award’s origins and to its inaugural winner, England and Blackpool legend Stanley Matthews.

Seventy years on from Matthews, London will again watch one of its own try to claim football’s most famous golden prize. The question now is whether Kane can finish the story Owen started and bring the Ballon d’Or back to English hands.
