Hansi Flick has wasted no time laying down his standards at Barcelona – and Alejandro Balde has felt it first.

As Barça began the defence of their La Liga crown away to Elche at the Estadio Martínez Valero, the headline before a ball was kicked was not about the new era or the fresh faces. It was about who wasn’t there.

No Balde in the XI. No Balde on the bench. Nowhere in the matchday squad.

The full-back’s absence came against a noisy backdrop. In recent days, Balde’s name has been pushed to the forefront of the Barcelona news cycle, with speculation swirling over a possible Camp Nou exit for the Spaniard. On a night when Hansi Flick unveiled a powerful squad, the omission cut through the team sheet.

No dressing it up. No vague reference to “technical reasons.” Flick framed the call as a mental and physical reset for a player who has been at the centre of transfer talk and scrutiny.
