Hansi Flick's Bold Changes at Barcelona for First Match
Hansi Flick has wasted no time shaking up Barcelona.
For his first competitive XI of the season, against Elche CF this evening, the new head coach has backed youth, tweaked roles and parked a couple of big names on the bench.
Bold calls before a ball is kicked
The tone was set even before the lineup dropped. Alejandro Balde, Marc Casado and Hector Fort were all left out of the initial squad list, decisions that already raised eyebrows and underlined that reputations will not guarantee minutes under Flick.
Now the starting team confirms it: this is his Barcelona, from day one.
Xavi Espart, tipped earlier in the day to feature, goes straight into the side and straight into responsibility. The youngster starts at left-back, trusted to patrol an entire flank while new signing Joao Cancelo waits among the substitutes.

Gavi and Fermin Lopez complete the trio, both expected to drive forward, attack the half-spaces and support the front line. Bernal’s ability to “moderate the proceedings”, as the club framed it, will be crucial if that high‑energy approach is to hold together.
Adeyemi as a false nine
Up front, Flick’s most eye‑catching call comes in the centre of attack. New signing Karim Adeyemi starts as a false nine, a role that will drag defenders out of shape rather than simply pin them back.
Either side of him, Raphinha and Lamine Yamal provide width, speed and direct threat. The combination hints at a fluid, interchangeable front three, with Adeyemi dropping between the lines and the wingers driving beyond.
Firepower waiting on the bench
The bench is just as intriguing.
Anthony Gordon, another of the summer arrivals, is held back as a second‑half option, a potential game‑changer if the match opens up. Cancelo is there too, along with Pedri and Jules Kounde, giving Flick the tools to completely reshape his structure after the interval if required.
One more name lingers in the background: Hamza Abdelkarim. The forward has generated real buzz and offers a more traditional presence in the number nine role. Whether Flick chooses to unveil him tonight, or keeps that card up his sleeve for later in the season, will say plenty about how quickly he wants to evolve this side.
Either way, the message is already clear: under Hansi Flick, Barcelona will not ease into this new era. They are jumping straight in.
