Hansi Flick's Countdown: 11 Days to Prepare FC Barcelona for La Liga

Hansi Flick’s countdown has started. Eleven days. That’s all the new FC Barcelona coach has before his team walks into the 2026/27 La Liga season.

Because so many of Barça’s and Real Madrid’s stars went deep at the World Cup, the two giants will kick off a week later than most of the league. While much of Spain gets going earlier, the spotlight will fall on August 22 and 23.

On the 22nd, Real Madrid head to Catalonia to face Espanyol in Barcelona. The following night, Flick’s side open their campaign away at Elche. No easing in. No gentle home curtain-raiser. Straight on the road, straight into judgment.

That makes this short window crucial. Flick has roughly a week and a half to bring back his returning internationals, sharpen them, and plug them into his ideas. Lamine Yamal, Pedri and the rest of the core will need to move quickly from World Cup mode to club intensity.

Some have already flipped that switch.

Gavi was the first of Luis de la Fuente’s World Cup winners to report back. The midfielder started Spain’s opening 0-0 draw with Cabo Verde in Group H, then lost his starting spot on the left wing to Atletico Madrid’s Alex Baena for the remainder of the tournament. Now he’s back at the Ciutat Esportiva, trying to reclaim a different kind of place: his central role in Flick’s plans.

Eric Garcia and goalkeeper Joan Garcia followed on August 9, rejoining training as the squad slowly thickened out again. They weren’t alone. Anthony Gordon and Jules Kounde also checked in that day, both returning from deep World Cup runs in North America with England and France respectively.

Their final act at the tournament said plenty about their condition. Gordon and Kounde went head-to-head in a wild third-place playoff, a 6-4 win for England lit up by a Bukayo Saka hat trick. High tempo, high stakes, and no hiding places. Flick now inherits two players who have been living at that intensity for weeks.

Kounde’s situation carries an extra edge. The Frenchman has been a mainstay at right back, but that role is no longer untouchable. La Masia product Xavi Espart, from the 2007 generation, is pushing hard and could threaten Kounde’s grip on the position this season.

So Flick’s early days in charge are already layered: managing minutes after a draining World Cup, integrating returning champions, and overseeing real competition for places in key roles.

Eleven days to turn all of that into a team ready to start running at Elche. No margin for drift.
