Hafiz Gariba's Future at Barcelona: Flick's Decision on First-Team Promotion
Barcelona’s centre-back department looks thin. The calendar for 2026/27 looks brutal. Yet, for Hansi Flick, one name is firmly parked in the “future” folder, not the present: Hafiz Gariba.
According to information relayed by Adrian Sanchez and sourced by Barça Universal, the German coach does not currently see the highly rated youth defender as a realistic option for the first team, despite the club’s obvious lack of depth at the heart of defence.
It’s a harsh reality check for one of La Masia’s most eye-catching young centre-backs.
A rapid rise through the youth ranks
Gariba’s story inside Spanish football began to gain traction at Escuela Marcet, where his performances quickly drew scouts from several major clubs. Barcelona moved decisively, winning the race for his signature and tying him down on a three-year deal in February 2025, keeping him at the club until 2028.
Since then, the internal feedback has been glowing.
Coaches highlight his physical power and sharp defensive instincts. His imposing frame lets him eat up ground when recovering against quick forwards, while his reading of the game often puts him a step ahead, cutting out passes and stepping in for clean interceptions.
That blend has turned him into a regular for the Juvenil A side, where he has continued to strengthen his reputation as one of the more intriguing defensive projects in the academy.
The pre-season chance that never came
This summer was supposed to be his window.
Inside the club, there was real optimism that Gariba would at least train with the senior squad during preparations for the 2026/27 campaign. His name was on the table, his progress noted, and the pathway looked as if it might finally crack open.
Then a fever hit.
The illness ruled him out of first-team pre-season work and cost him the chance to feature in the friendly against CE Europa. The door that had just begun to open quietly swung shut again.
As Barcelona’s shortage at centre-back became more obvious, his name inevitably resurfaced as a potential solution. On paper, it made sense: a powerful, promising defender already in-house, under contract, and on an upward curve.
On the pitch, under Flick, that idea has stopped at the theory stage.
Flick’s hierarchy is set
Inside the senior squad, the pecking order is clear. Pau Cubarsi, Andreas Christensen and Gerard Martin are the recognised centre-backs. Jules Kounde can also shift inside, but Flick is primarily using the Frenchman at full-back.
That leaves Barcelona exposed to any injury crisis or suspension run in a season packed with fixtures, and it makes Gariba’s situation all the more striking. His development has been strong enough to draw attention and internal encouragement, yet, based on the current information, Flick is not ready to lean on him at senior level.
For Gariba, the message is blunt but familiar to many La Masia talents: the club believes in his future, the contract proves it, the coaches praise his progress – but the step into the first team will not be rushed.
