Ghana's President Mahama Warns on Young Talent Drain in Football
Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has warned that the steady drain of young stars from the local game is eroding the strength and quality of domestic football.
Speaking at Jubilee House on September 8, 2026, during a meeting with Nations FC, Medeama SC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies, Mahama drew a direct line between early player exits and a weakening national league, MyJoyOnline reported.
“We’re losing them too soon”
Mahama did not mince words about the speed at which local clubs part with their best prospects. As soon as a player shows promise, he said, scouts move in and the youngster is whisked away from the Ghanaian championship.
In his view, that pattern is dragging down the overall standard of the domestic competition. The league loses its brightest talents just as they begin to bloom, and with them goes the chance to build stronger, more competitive teams at home.
The president stressed that Ghana is surrendering its young talent far too early. He called for concrete ways to keep emerging players in the national league for longer, giving clubs and fans a chance to see them grow before they head abroad.
National team as a finishing school
Mahama also floated a clear pathway: the national team.
He proposed that promising players be given opportunities with Ghana’s national side to gain experience at international level while still rooted in the local game. That exposure, he argued, would help them reach a more mature stage of development before they catch the eye of international or even local scouts looking to move them on.
Only after that stage, Mahama believes, should they be making the jump to foreign clubs and bigger contracts. Until then, he wants Ghana’s own stadiums to be the stage where the country’s next generation of stars truly learn their craft.
