Gattuso Faces Milan: A Personal Rivalry and Tactical Insight

Gennaro Gattuso has never been able to treat Milan as just another opponent. Not now, not ever.

On Sunday evening at the Stadio Olimpico, as Lazio host the club that shaped almost every chapter of his football life, the 46-year-old stands on the touchline with the Rossoneri crest staring back at him from the opposite bench. The kick-off is set for 17.00 UK time (18.00 CEST), but the emotional undercurrent has been running all day.

This is the club where he grew up as a player, the shirt he wore for practically his entire career, the bench he once occupied as coach. Milan built Gattuso, and he knows it.

“I built my career at Milan, I had champions by my side, and that made it a lot easier,” he told DAZN Italia before the game, his voice steady but the weight of history obvious. “I don’t read the papers, it’s better that way, so I concentrate on my work.”

The backdrop is unusual. There are more Milan fans than Lazio supporters inside the Olimpico, the home crowd still locked in a boycott against President Claudio Lotito. The noise, the colours, the banners – it all feels like an away day for Lazio in their own stadium.

Gattuso doesn’t flinch. He talks about work, about intensity, about repairing the damage of an early Coppa Italia exit.

“The players need to put passion into the game,” he said. “We went out in the first round of the Coppa Italia, but the lads believe in what they are doing. If there is a little more enthusiasm today, that is thanks to the players.”

His analysis of Milan is typically direct. No mystique, just detail.

“We analysed Milan. At times they can sit back with five in a row, then can hurt you on the counter-attack with their wingers, like Chukwueze with his crosses. At times they are aggressive, at others they sit deeper. We must have courage and show respect to them, but do things our way for a good performance.”

Gattuso wants his side to play with personality against the club that defined his own.

Gattuso’s stark metaphor for Nuno Tavares

If his view of Milan is cold and tactical, his assessment of Nuno Tavares is anything but. It’s vivid, almost brutal.

The 26-year-old Portuguese full-back has carried the “potential” tag for years without ever quite settling: Benfica, Arsenal, Olympique Marseille, now Lazio. Flashes of brilliance, long spells of frustration.

Gattuso chose an image that sticks.

“I always said that Tavares is worthy of Real Madrid,” he began. “He feels like someone who lost his parents young, received a big inheritance, and in five years it went up in smoke.”

It’s a striking metaphor, and he doubles down on it.

“This is a player who ought to be at Real Madrid. He’s got everything it takes, he has pace, right foot, left foot. He is unusual, but after a match he needs his time to recover, but he’s a good lad, you need to get into his head and make him understand.”

The message is clear: the tools are there, the career isn’t.

“He knows he has talent and could’ve had 10/12 years at Real Madrid with his qualities. You’ve just got to get him to understand.”

On a night when Gattuso confronts the club that gave him everything, he is trying to stop one of his own players from letting everything slip away.
