Gattuso Praises Lazio's Resilience in Comeback Win Against Udinese

Gennaro Gattuso hailed Lazio’s steel and “alive” mentality after they ripped up a losing script to beat Udinese 2-1 – and then admitted his mind is already drifting towards an emotional reunion with Milan.

Lazio trailed to a second-half strike from Jesper Karlstrom, the Stadio Olimpico growing tense as memories of August’s Coppa Italia exit to Mantova lingered in the background. This time, though, Gattuso’s side refused to fold.

Davide Frattesi dragged them level, Albert Gudmundsson completed the turnaround, and by the final whistle the comeback felt like a statement as much as a victory.

Gattuso’s new Lazio shows its teeth

For Gattuso, the manner of the response mattered more than the scoreline.

“The mentality and the desire. We dismantled everything compared to last year, when there was a master of the 4-3-3, and we are trying to do something different,” he told Sky Sport, with his words relayed via TuttoMercatoWeb.

He knows exactly what he has walked into: a club used to a very specific idea of football, now being asked to embrace something new. The early Coppa Italia failure to Mantova on August 16 underlined how painful that transition can be.

Yet this league fightback suggested the players are starting to absorb his demands.

“The lads are doing things well. What we are trying to propose is not easy, but the team is alive,” Gattuso said, underlining the edge and aggression he wants as non‑negotiable traits.

On the touchline at the Olimpico, the image was familiar: Gattuso pacing, gesturing, barking instructions, living every duel. The difference now is the colour of the tracksuit and the project he is trying to build.

Gattuso also turned the spotlight on the work done off the pitch. Lazio’s summer looked complicated, their room for manoeuvre limited. He did not hide how tough it was.

“With great difficulty, we made a transfer market that we didn’t think we could make. I have to thank both him and Fabiani; they deserve enormous credit for the players who arrived,” he said, singling out President Claudio Lotito and sporting director Angelo Fabiani.

That gratitude matters. Gattuso has been clear that his football requires specific profiles, energy and character as much as technical quality. He now feels the squad better reflects that idea, even if the process is far from complete.

The win over Udinese, carved out under pressure, offered an early return on that summer investment.

Milan on the horizon – the team of his heart

Next comes something very different: Milan. For Gattuso, it is never just another game.

“As a child, I remember the parade after the Steaua game with my father. For me, it was always an honour and a dream that lasted 12 years,” he said, evoking the club that shaped his career and identity.

Twelve years in red and black leave a mark that does not fade. Trophies, battles, San Siro nights – all of it still lives with him. He does not pretend otherwise.

“All the affection and joy cannot be forgotten, but today I have another job and on Sunday I hope to take points from the team of my heart.”

That is the tightrope he now walks: the emotional pull of Milan on one side, the ruthless duty to Lazio on the other. The comeback against Udinese showed his new team is starting to mirror his personality.

On Sunday, in front of the club that made him, we find out how far that transformation has really gone.
