Gattuso Apologises to Lazio Fans After Coppa Italia Defeat
Gennaro Gattuso did not look for excuses. He walked into the cameras after Lazio’s 2-0 home defeat to Serie B side Mantova and took the hit himself.
“We took a beating, and I'm putting my face on it. Now, heads down and get on with it,” he told Sportmediaset, the words landing as heavily as the result itself.
A few months ago, Lazio were walking out for a Coppa Italia final. On Sunday at the Stadio Olimpico, they crashed out in the Round of 64, undone by a Mantova side who arrived as underdogs and left with a famous win. The home crowd made their anger clear; Gattuso chose to respond with an apology.
“We apologise,” he said. “Just a few months ago, Lazio were in the final, and today we've been eliminated by a Serie B team.”
The performance gave him little protection. Lazio created some chances, but they never truly imposed themselves, especially before the break.
“In the first half we only did things halfway; we weren't aggressive,” Gattuso admitted. “There were chances, so some good things were done. We have to stay united and preserve our sense of belonging.”
The coach pointed to the short time he has had with the squad, without turning it into a shield.
“Believe me, the players are working well, but in 40 days it's difficult to absorb the ideas. Tonight we took a punch in the face, and we felt it. We know the fans aren't happy; we hope to turn things around.”
The evening had also been framed by transfer talk. Lazio had only just announced the signing of Davide Frattesi in the days leading up to the tie, and the midfielder was introduced in the 71st minute. Any hope that his debut might spark a late reaction never materialised.
When the conversation moved towards the market, Gattuso shut it down.
“I don't want to talk about it [the transfer market],” he said. “Because it would be too easy to focus on what this team is missing.”
The message was clear: no distractions, no alibis. Just the sting of an early Coppa Italia exit and the hard work required to make sure nights like this do not define Lazio’s season.
