Cabrera Suspension Hits Espanyol Ahead of Real Madrid Clash
Espanyol’s preparations for Real Madrid have been rocked by the loss of their defensive leader. Leandro Cabrera, the Uruguayan centre-back and one of the pillars of their back line, will be forced to sit out next Saturday’s clash because of a deferred suspension carried over from last season.
The club confirmed that Cabrera has now begun serving a three-match ban handed down after an explosive end to last season’s game against Getafe. According to the referee’s report from that match, the defender struck the VAR screen after the final whistle, an outburst that earned him a heavy sanction.
The timing of the punishment has already caused confusion. Cabrera’s absence from the recent game against Levante raised eyebrows inside and outside the club. His name appeared on the morning squad list, only for him to disappear from the starting XI minutes before kick-off, with no mention of any physical problem.
Espanyol pushed the appeal process to the limit, fighting to delay the suspension for as long as possible. The effort failed. The original decision stood, and Cabrera was ruled out of the Levante match, where Espanyol finally collected their first La Liga victory of the season. Unless something dramatic changes, he will also miss the visit of Real Madrid.
Defensive Adjustments
Against Levante, coach Manolo turned to Riedel alongside Unai Nunez at the heart of defence. The makeshift pairing coped comfortably, helped by a largely toothless Levante attack that rarely troubled Dmitrovic’s goal. It was a clean sheet built without major alarms.
Real Madrid will offer nothing like that comfort.
Kylian Mbappe leads an attacking line that punishes the slightest hesitation, and Cabrera’s absence suddenly feels enormous. The Uruguayan is one of the most seasoned figures in Espanyol’s squad, with a long catalogue of battles against Spain’s biggest clubs. His experience, positional sense and aggression in duels are exactly what you want when Los Blancos come to town.
Instead, Espanyol must improvise again, trusting a new partnership to hold firm against one of the most ruthless forward lines in Europe. For a team just finding its feet in the league, it is a brutal test of nerve and organisation.
