Why Folarin Balogun Received a Red Card in USMNT vs Bosnia and Herzegovina at 2026 World Cup
Folarin Balogun was shown a straight red card during the 64th minute of the United States Men's National Team's match against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup Round of 32, held at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. This left the US team down to ten players for the remainder of the game.
The Incident Behind the Red Card
Balogun had opened the scoring just before halftime, giving the USA a 1-0 advantage. His dismissal came after a from-behind challenge on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. The referee judged the tackle as serious foul play. Although it didn’t appear intentional or excessively dangerous, the reckless nature of the challenge led to an immediate red card instead of a yellow.
Impact on the USMNT
This was a significant setback for the Americans. Balogun had been the central figure in their attack throughout the tournament and losing their top scorer forced coach Mauricio Pochettino’s team to defend their narrow lead with just ten men for over 25 minutes.
Even with one player less, the US side kept pressing forward, determined not to settle for a single goal. Their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman curled a beautiful free kick into the net, sealing the victory and advancing the USA to the Round of 16.
The red card also means Balogun faces an automatic one-match suspension, ruling him out of the next game if the USA progresses further.
Next Challenge Without Balogun
The US secured their first knockout-stage win in the World Cup since 2002 with this triumph over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Their next opponent will be Belgium, with the match set for July 6 at Seattle Stadium. A win there would send the USMNT to the quarterfinals, matching their best-ever World Cup finish.
Unfortunately, Balogun will miss that crucial encounter due to the suspension from his red card. This absence could affect the team's offensive options significantly.
