John Barnes Identifies Fitness as Bukayo Saka’s Key Challenge at 2026 World Cup

England legend John Barnes pinpointed fitness as the major hurdle for Bukayo Saka as the Arsenal winger competes in the 2026 World Cup. Speaking exclusively to GOAL, Barnes suggested that the winger’s goal-scoring record isn’t what truly matters in this tournament.

Saka's Recent Triumphs and Physical Setbacks

After helping Arsenal claim their first Premier League title in over two decades, Saka was part of the squad that faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final, which ended in a penalty shootout defeat. Despite his clear importance to manager Mikel Arteta, Saka has battled persistent physical issues. He entered the World Cup carrying an Achilles injury that limited his involvement early on.

Against Croatia, he started on the bench while teammate Noni Madueke took the right wing spot. Training sessions ahead of England’s clash with Ghana saw Saka following an individual program, not joining full group drills.

Is Saka Still England’s First Choice?

"It’s his fitness," Barnes said when asked about Saka’s status. "His form has been strong for Arsenal, but fitness is the key. Madueke is fit right now and may be ahead of him. Thomas Tuchel knows how much Saka can influence games based on his condition."

Barnes emphasized that quality is evident but fitness will determine if Saka starts or remains on the bench.

Does Goal Scoring Matter for Saka?

Last season, injuries limited Saka to 11 goals in all competitions, with just seven in the Premier League. Barnes dismissed concerns about his goal tally, saying:

"His goal output doesn’t need to be high if the team wins. If England lifts the World Cup and he scores no goals, it’s irrelevant. What matters is being part of a winning squad."

Barnes pointed out the dynamics of team scoring, noting that more goals from one player often mean fewer from another. The emphasis lies on teamwork and creating opportunities for stars like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane.

No Risks Taken Ahead of Ghana Game

Coach Thomas Tuchel plans to manage Saka’s minutes carefully during the tournament. After bringing him on against Croatia, where he contributed to Marcus Rashford’s goal, Tuchel stated, "Bukayo is ready and will get more ready. By the last group game, he should be fully fit."

Saka missed the group training session before facing Ghana, opting for an individual indoor routine while the rest trained outside. It remains uncertain if he will be fully involved by the time England faces Panama in their final Group L match.
