Fabio Vieira Completes Move to Hamburg

Fabio Vieira’s Arsenal chapter is over. The Portuguese midfielder has completed a permanent move to Hamburg, with the Bundesliga club paying around 10m euros (£8.6m) to keep him in Germany.

The 26-year-old has effectively been edging towards this exit for two seasons. First came a return to Porto on loan for the 2024-25 campaign, then a switch to Hamburg last term, where he did enough to convince the club to turn the deal into a full-time stay.

Vieira arrived at Arsenal from Porto in 2022 as a creative option for the midfield and attacking lines, but never fully nailed down a starting place. He leaves north London with 49 appearances to his name, flashes of quality, and the sense that his career may yet take off elsewhere.

For Arsenal, this is part of a wider reset. Vieira was among the players the club had placed on the market this summer, with forwards Gabriel Jesus and Gabriel Martinelli also expected to depart on permanent deals as the squad is reshaped.

One of the next moves could involve a teenager rather than a senior name. Academy product Ethan Nwaneri is close to securing a loan switch to Borussia Dortmund, a club with a clear track record of developing young talent at the highest level.

Arsenal are trimming, recalibrating, and taking some big decisions. Hamburg, meanwhile, have decided Vieira is worth building around.
