Everton Pursues Folarin Balogun as Transfer Deadline Approaches
Everton have dived into the final hours of the European transfer window with a bold move for Folarin Balogun, turning a tense market into a frantic sprint.
The Merseyside club have lodged a formal bid for the USMNT striker, as reported by Fabrizio Romano and Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, and are now locked in a high-stakes negotiation with Monaco.
Balogun ready for Premier League return
At 25, with Arsenal already on his CV, Balogun views a return to English football as the right next step. Those close to the talks describe him as fully on board with the move, keen to “rejoin the English ecosystem” and test himself again in the Premier League.
Everton’s hierarchy have intensified contact in recent hours, working on the financial structure of a deal that already has the player’s approval. They know time is short. The window is closing, and this is a move that has to land cleanly or not at all.
Beto out, Balogun in?
The urgency at Goodison Park is clear. Beto is on the verge of joining Fiorentina, and his departure opens up both a gap in attack and room in the budget.
Everton have moved quickly. Their opening offer to Monaco is understood to be around €18 million, using the financial space created by Beto’s imminent exit. It’s a firm statement of intent, but it is also some way short of Monaco’s valuation.
The Ligue 1 club want close to €40 million for Balogun, aiming to recoup the investment they made when they brought him in. Personal terms with Everton are already agreed, but the clubs remain apart on price, keeping the talks on a knife-edge as the deadline looms.
A striker in limbo
On the pitch, Balogun’s situation has been frozen. He has yet to play an official minute for Monaco this Ligue 1 season.
After featuring for the United States at the World Cup over the summer, the forward completed his physical preparation while his representatives and Monaco searched for a “top-level destination” for him. Everyone has been waiting for the right door to open. Everton are now trying to kick it down.
One deal, two continents
This is not just a story about England and France. The outcome of the Balogun saga cuts straight into Mexican football as well.
Monaco need to free up a non-EU squad spot to finalise the signing of Cruz Azul midfielder Erik Lira. The two clubs already have an agreement in place for the Mexican international, but the move cannot be completed until Monaco clear that foreign-player slot.
Balogun’s departure is the key. Once he goes, the vacancy in the non-EU quota appears, and Lira can step into it. Until then, his transfer is stuck in administrative limbo.
Monaco are not exposed in attack, either. The emergence of young German forward Paris Brunner has given their sporting department cover in the frontline, which only sharpens the focus on moving Balogun out and fast-tracking Lira into midfield.
Everton go all in
Throughout the window, Balogun’s name has been linked with several Premier League clubs. Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Newcastle all sounded him out at different points.
None of them, though, have gone as far as Everton, who have now put a concrete offer on the table and pushed themselves to the front of the queue.
The clock is ticking. Monaco want their money, Everton want their striker, and Lira is waiting in Mexico for the dominoes to fall. One deal now has the power to reshape squads in three leagues.
