Manchester United have sanctioned another cut from their academy ranks, with highly rated winger Ethan Williams leaving Old Trafford for Peterborough United in a deal understood to be worth north of £750,000.

The 20-year-old, fresh from a pre-season tour with United that included a goal in a 5-0 win over Rosenborg, has signed a long-term contract with the League One club as the clear-out of fringe and youth players underlines the ruthlessness of the current regime.

United keep trimming as rebuild rolls on

They made sure to highlight his recent United involvement too: a full pre-season tour, match minutes, and that goal in the 5-0 victory over Rosenborg.

Manager Luke Williams sounded delighted with the profile of his new wide man.

“Ethan is a player that will give us another option in the wide areas, he is quick, direct and will be a threat and I am looking forward to working with him,” the Posh boss said. “He has already got first team experience at a few clubs and joins us after being away with Manchester United on their pre-season tour, so he is fit and ready to go.”

For United, it is another tidy fee banked and one more pathway cleared in a squad that is being aggressively streamlined. For Peterborough, it is a calculated swing on Premier League talent that has tasted the first-team environment but needed a permanent stage.
