Estevao Willian's Struggles as Chelsea Faces Brentford

Chelsea’s first attacking shake-up of the night has arrived – and it does nothing to ease the growing questions around Estevao Willian’s role.

With Brentford leading 1-0 and the clock ticking past 70 minutes, Xabi Alonso finally rolled the dice. The new Chelsea manager withdrew Danny Welbeck, pushed Morgan Rogers into the central striker role and sent on Geovany Quenda to take up Rogers’ usual berth on the left.

For Estevao, watching from the bench again, it stung.

The Brazilian teenager was already under scrutiny for his absence from the Premier League starting XI. Now he has slipped another rung down the ladder, overlooked even when Alonso needed fresh attacking impetus in a game slipping away.

There is, of course, a tactical logic to the call. Quenda is a natural fit on the left. Estevao prefers the right flank or a more central role. With Cole Palmer untouchable in that right-sided slot, any change involving Estevao would have forced either him or Palmer into an uncomfortable shift to the left.

Alonso chose not to disturb his main creative hub. Estevao stayed seated.

He will almost certainly be the next attacking option turned to, but the symbolism matters. Not being the first name called from the bench only deepens the sense of frustration around his start to life in English football – especially as he watches Pedro Neto grind through another full 90 minutes on the right without making the position his own.

Midfield Performance

While the focus falls on the forward line, one of the quieter stories of the night has unfolded in midfield.

Jordan Henderson, on debut, has been Chelsea’s standout performer. Not because he has split Brentford open or produced anything spectacular, but because he has done the simple things with authority. He has put his foot on the ball, calmed the tempo, and given Alonso’s side a measure of control they have badly lacked in recent weeks.

For Henderson, it is a significant first step. For Chelsea, it is an early hint at how their midfield hierarchy might start to settle under Alonso – even as the attacking pecking order, and Estevao’s place within it, becomes a little more complicated with every passing minute.
