Enzo Fernandez Saga: Xabi Alonso Seeks Clarity Amid Transfer Speculation

Xabi Alonso wants the Enzo Fernandez saga off his desk – and quickly.

Manchester City are weighing up a fresh move for the Argentina midfielder after initially refusing to meet Chelsea’s £120 million valuation before the club-imposed deadline two weeks ago. That cut-off came and went without a bid, but City have not walked away, with new reports indicating they are readying another offer.

All of this has left Fernandez’s future hanging in the balance for most of the summer. Early in the window he was strongly linked with Real Madrid, only for the European champions to cool their interest and step away from the noise. That opened the door for Enzo Maresca’s City, who see the World Cup winner as a potential marquee addition in the middle of the pitch.

For now, though, he is back in blue.

Fernandez has rejoined Chelsea training and, on the evidence of Monday night, sits firmly in Alonso’s plans. The 23-year-old started on the bench for the Premier League opener but was introduced on 65 minutes and helped Chelsea see out a 3-2 win, a chaotic, breathless start to their league campaign.

Once the points were secured, the questions were inevitable.

Pressed on whether Fernandez would still be his player when the window shuts, Alonso offered no guarantees but made his own preference clear.

“In football, I am not surprised by anything,” he told BBC Radio Five Live. “We will see. My wish is that we know what will happen for the future but we will see this week.”

The message was plain: he wants clarity, and he wants it soon.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are braced for a busy final stretch of the window, with the emphasis firmly on trimming the squad. Liam Delap is in talks over a move to Nottingham Forest, while Mamadou Sarr is also close to an exit. Nicolas Jackson, Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Guiu are all expected to be part of the outgoing traffic as well, whether on loan or permanent deals, as the club reshapes Maresca’s options.

Dario Essugo has been made available for loan too, another sign of the clear-out underway at Cobham.
