Enzo Fernandez's Mixed Reception in Chelsea's Win Over Real Sociedad
Stamford Bridge gave Enzo Fernandez a jarring reminder of where he stands with parts of the Chelsea support on Saturday – and then, slowly, offered something closer to forgiveness.
Chelsea wrapped up their pre-season with a 3-1 win over Real Sociedad, but the scoreline briefly felt secondary when Fernandez stepped onto the pitch in the 64th minute. Reece James, heading off, passed him the captain’s armband. Some in the stands answered with jeers.
The reaction, reported by French broadcaster RMC, cut through the usual friendly hum. This was Fernandez’s first Chelsea appearance since returning from the World Cup, where Argentina lost the final 1-0 to Spain, yet the mood around him in west London has far less to do with international football.
A section of the home crowd made their anger clear. Another section tried to drown it out.
As Fernandez jogged on, many Chelsea fans rose to applaud, determined to welcome him back. The noise clashed – boos from one corner, claps from another – before the match itself began to take back control. As Chelsea pushed on and the minutes ticked by, the hostility started to fade.
By the latter stages, the mood had flipped. According to Sky Sports, chants of “Oh, Enzo Fernandez” rolled around Stamford Bridge, the same player who had been booed on arrival now being serenaded by large parts of the ground.
The whiplash reflected the fault line running through the fanbase. Some supporters remain furious with Fernandez, convinced he wants out after a season that ended without Champions League qualification. For them, the boos were payback.
That frustration had already been stoked earlier in the summer when Fernandez publicly spoke about his desire to play for Real Madrid one day. Those comments did not go down well inside the club and coincided with him being left out of the squad for two matches.
Now there is fresh fuel. Manchester City have moved into the picture in recent days, exploring a move for Fernandez at a time when Rodri is a possible target for Barcelona. The interest from the Premier League champions comes with a familiar admirer in the background: Enzo Maresca, now City manager, who worked with Fernandez at Chelsea and rates him highly.
So Chelsea’s final friendly before the new campaign did more than tune up fitness levels. It exposed a raw tension between a gifted midfielder, a fanbase split over his future, and a transfer market that refuses to leave him alone.
