Enzo Fernández's Chelsea Future in Doubt After EFL Cup Omission

Enzo Fernández’s Chelsea future has been thrown into fresh doubt after Xabi Alonso left the midfielder out of the squad for the EFL Cup tie against Luton Town, with Manchester City circling as the transfer deadline looms.

The Argentina international, who made it clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge, was a notable absentee as Chelsea progressed in the cup. Spanish outlet Marca reported his omission, while insisting City are weighing up a move before the window shuts.

Alonso, though, stood firm on his explanation. For him, this was about football, not the market.

“It was simply about today’s match,” the Chelsea head coach said after the win over Luton. “We have other players who need minutes to play.”

He underlined that point again when asked when he decided to drop Fernández. There was no hint of last‑minute drama.

“Wednesday evening. It’s a decision I made,” he stated.

Alonso repeatedly backed the 23-year-old’s attitude, stressing that whatever is happening off the pitch, Fernández has not let it seep into his daily work.

The Spaniard described him as “extremely professional,” highlighting how well he trains and how he has handled the situation. Squad rotation and the specific demands of the Luton tie, Alonso argued, dictated the call.

Even so, the timing is impossible to ignore. Reports in England suggest Manchester City are actively considering a bid, and Fernández’s omission inevitably adds fuel to the speculation.

Alonso did, however, leave the door wide open for an immediate return. Chelsea host Brighton at Stamford Bridge in the league on Sunday, and the manager made it clear that Fernández remains firmly in his thoughts.

“Enzo is a good professional. He trains well, and I have nothing to say about that,” Alonso said. “Simply, these are decisions we have to make with the match we played tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday.”
