Edu Exits Nottingham Forest After Turbulent Year

Edu’s short and stormy spell at Nottingham Forest is over, with the club’s global head of football leaving just over a year after arriving at the City Ground.

The former Arsenal midfielder had not been seen at a Forest game since February, and his departure – with his contract understood to have been terminated – had been looming for months. The silence around his absence only amplified the sense that something had snapped inside the club’s football structure.

His role came under heavy scrutiny after a breakdown in relations with Nuno Espirito Santo, sacked last September and the first of four managers to pass through Forest last season. Nuno publicly hinted at internal friction and admitted his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had changed, a pointed remark that shone a light on tensions at the top.

The pressure finally told. Edu, a central figure in Marinakis’ multi-club project, is now out.

Forest are not expected to appoint a direct replacement. Instead, chief football officer George Syrianos will absorb Edu’s responsibilities, tightening the power base around the German executive as the club tries to steady itself after a chaotic campaign.

Edu had been appointed in July 2025 with a wide-ranging remit that stretched beyond Nottingham. His brief covered Olympiacos in Greece and Rio Ave in Portugal, both also owned by Marinakis, making him a key architect in the owner’s wider football network.

He arrived with a strong reputation from Arsenal, where he spent six years in the front office and became the club’s first sporting director in 2022. As a player, he had already written his name into the club’s history with two Premier League titles and two FA Cups. As an executive, he played a decisive role in bringing Mikel Arteta to Emirates Stadium, a move that culminated in Arsenal’s first Premier League crown in 22 years last season.

Now that chapter has closed in Nottingham, the reshaping of Marinakis’ hierarchy continues. Edu’s exit follows the appointment of former Olympiacos vice-president Theodore Giannikos as Forest’s new chief executive last week.

Giannikos replaces Lina Souloukou, who stepped down at the end of last season, leaving Forest with a very different leadership cast to the one that started the previous campaign. The structure has changed. The pressure to make it work has not.
