Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan in Blockbuster Transfer
Djed Spence touched down in Milan late on Thursday night, the final act of a summer transfer saga that has ended with Inter getting their man and Tottenham drawing a line under four chaotic years.
The 26-year-old defender arrived at the airport to find cameras waiting and a small crowd of Inter supporters ready to welcome him. On Friday he is due to undergo his medical, the last formal step before he is unveiled at San Siro.
The agreement is worth an initial €31.5 million (£27m), with performance-related bonuses that could drive the fee up to €35m (£30m). Tottenham have also protected their future by inserting a 10 per cent sell-on clause into the deal.
For Spence, the move is the reward for a summer in which his reputation exploded on the international stage. He enjoyed a standout 2026 World Cup with England, playing a major role as the Three Lions battled their way to the third-place play-off against France. Those performances hardened Inter’s interest and pushed them into making a decisive offer.
The Italian giants have been scouring the market for a replacement for Denzel Dumfries, who left for Real Madrid in early July. Spence fit the profile: athletic, tactically flexible, and already tested in Serie A. Personal terms were never an obstacle, with the full-back quickly reaching an agreement with the Nerazzurri hierarchy.
His exit from north London had been looming. Spence leaves Tottenham having made 85 senior appearances and with a Europa League winners’ medal to his name, but his route to regular football had narrowed sharply ahead of the new Premier League season.
Pedro Porro has just signed a lucrative new contract to cement his status as first-choice right-back, while Andy Robertson has arrived to strengthen the left side. With both flanks locked down, minutes for Spence were always going to be scarce. New Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi sanctioned the sale, clearing space in a squad that staggered through last season.
Spence featured 44 times in that campaign as Tottenham flirted with disaster, only securing their Premier League safety on the final day. The club’s wider turbulence mirrored his own stop-start journey in England, and by the end it was clear a clean break suited all parties.
Italy will not be new ground. Spence previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, a spell that quietly toughened him up and gave him a first-hand education in the tactical demands of Serie A. Inter are banking on that experience helping him settle quickly.
Once Friday’s medical is completed, Spence is expected to dive straight into preparations for the new season with Simone Inzaghi’s side. Inter have their replacement for Dumfries. Spence has his second shot at Italian football. Now he has to prove that the World Cup form was not a summer spike, but the start of his prime.
