Djed Spence Joins Inter Milan for £25.6m from Spurs
Inter Milan have landed England full-back Djed Spence from Tottenham, completing a five-year deal that underlines the Serie A champions’ intent to refresh their flanks with proven international quality.
The Italian giants are understood to be paying around 30m euros (£25.6m) for the 26-year-old, who becomes the second England player to walk into the San Siro dressing room this summer after John Stones arrived on a free following the end of his Manchester City contract.
A goodbye written in advance
By the time Inter made the move official, Spurs fans had already read the writing on the wall. Spence effectively announced his exit earlier on Saturday, posting a heartfelt farewell across his social media channels.
“A special chapter comes to an end, It's been some journey, with plenty of memories, moments and experiences that I'll carry with me for forever, especially that night in Bilbao,” he wrote.
He went on to thank “all the staff members who've helped me along the way, the players who've become family and most importantly… the fans,” before signing off with a line that will resonate in north London: “Time for a new chapter now, but Spurs will always have a place in my heart.”
The message closed the book on a spell that brought both silverware and a sense of unfinished business.
From World Cup mainstay to squeezed out at Spurs
Spence heads to Italy on the back of a demanding year. He featured in all eight of England’s matches at the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s side battled their way to a third-place finish, underlining his status as a trusted option on the biggest stage.
At club level, he remained heavily involved. The defender made 44 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham during the 2025-26 campaign, a clear sign of his importance to Roberto de Zerbi’s side across a long season.
But the landscape shifted quickly. First-choice right-back Pedro Porro signed a new contract in June, cementing his status on that flank, while Tottenham moved to bring in Andy Robertson from Liverpool to strengthen the left side of their defence. With both full-back positions suddenly crowded, Spence’s path to regular starts narrowed.
De Zerbi had publicly stated in July that he wanted to convince Spence to stay, but the market – and Inter’s offer – changed the conversation. The pull of a leading role at the Serie A champions, and another crack at Italian football, proved decisive.
A Spurs chapter closed, medals in the bag
Spence leaves north London with a European trophy and a solid body of work behind him. Tottenham signed him from Middlesbrough in 2022 for an initial £12.5m, and he went on to make 85 appearances for the club.
His standout achievement came in Europe. He played his part in Spurs’ 2024-25 Europa League triumph, a run that restored the club’s reputation on the continent and gave Spence a defining high point in a white shirt. That “night in Bilbao” he referenced will need no further explanation for Tottenham supporters.
Back to Italy, but on a very different stage
This move is not Spence’s first taste of Italian football. He previously spent six months on loan at Genoa in 2024, a short spell that offered a glimpse of Serie A but nothing like the pressure and expectation he will now face at Inter.
This time he arrives not as a loanee looking for minutes, but as a major investment for the champions, a World Cup ever-present walking into a squad built to compete deep into Europe.
For Inter, it is another calculated step in reshaping a title-winning side without losing its edge. For Spence, it is exactly what he called it: a new chapter – and one that will be judged not on sentiment, but on whether he can turn that World Cup consistency into week‑to‑week dominance in the black and blue of Inter.
