Diomande: Madrid’s Record Signing Who Couldn’t Sleep After the Call

At 19, Diomande has already lived the moment most young footballers script only in their heads. The winger, one of Europe’s most coveted prospects, is now a Real Madrid player — and a record one at that — and he still sounds like someone pinching himself awake.

“It was like a dream because there is no bigger club,” he told SportyTV, his voice still laced with disbelief. “From the moment I found out, I couldn't sleep. I couldn't believe it. I spoke with Juni [Calafat] and then I spoke with the coach. I was surprised because he spoke French.”

The Bernabeu has seen a lot of prodigies walk through its doors, but Diomande arrives into a dressing room already loaded with heavyweight talent. Kylian Mbappe. Jude Bellingham. Now the teenager from Ivory Coast joins that constellation, insisting that the moment hasn’t gone to his head.

He calls it simple: “Proud and happy because I have made my dream come true.” Grounded words, even as his career takes off at frightening speed.

Mourinho’s 5am Call and a Promise Kept

Behind the transfer, there is a familiar figure. José Mourinho, back in the Madrid dugout, played a decisive role in convincing Diomande that this was his stage.

“Mourinho got up at 5 in the morning to talk to me. That means he is important,” Diomande revealed. When Real Madrid came calling, there was never going to be a long negotiation in his mind. “When Madrid calls you, you can't say no, so I said: ‘If they want me, that's where I'll be’.”

The relationship clicked as soon as he walked through the door.

“As soon as I arrived, he told me: ‘I promised you that you were going to be part of my team, and here you are,’” Diomande recalled. His response was instant and unfiltered: “I’m happy to work with you because you are the best.”

Then came the line that will endear him to the Bernabeu crowd as quickly as any step-over. “I can learn a lot from him; he is the right coach to continue my development. I am prepared to die for him.”

Those are not the words of a player easing himself in. They are the words of someone ready to run straight through the door Mourinho has opened.

Mourinho’s View: No Demands, Just Opportunity

For all the emotion on Diomande’s side, Mourinho has been keen to draw a clear line about how this deal came together. He insists he did not march back into Real Madrid demanding signings.

“No, I didn't ask for anyone,” he said when pressed on the transfer. “I came in without demanding a single player, having taken a good look at the squad and knowing exactly what I wanted to happen.”

The club, though, put Diomande on the table. At that point, the calculus changed.

“Finding a wide player [like Diomande] who is quick, aggressive, and can play on both flanks isn't easy, it's incredibly tough,” Mourinho explained. “Add to that the fact that he's young, has room to develop, and has many years ahead of him at Real Madrid... when that opportunity came up, I didn't want to get into whether he cost 120, 80, 40, or 20 [million].”

The price tag, record or not, is noise. The profile is what matters: pace, edge, versatility, and time. Exactly the sort of weapon a manager like Mourinho relishes on the flanks.

From Leganes Debut to Sharing a Dressing Room with Mbappe

Diomande’s story has a touch of football poetry. His professional debut came at the Bernabeu, not in white, but in the colours of Leganes. The same pitch where he now trains every day was once an intimidating away ground, the arena where he first showed he belonged at this level.

“It is God's doing. I believe a lot in God,” he said. “It has been quite a coincidence. I just want to enjoy every day.”

From that first appearance, one memory stands out. “From that match I remember swapping shirts with Mbappe, and today we are in the same dressing room laughing together.”

The full circle is striking. Mbappe’s shirt once went home with a starstruck teenager. Now Mbappe is a teammate, not an idol on the opposite team sheet.

Through it all, Diomande hasn’t forgotten the club that gave him his start. “I will never forget Leganes because it was the only club that gave me the opportunity to show my quality.”

A New Weapon for a Team Built to Dominate

On the pitch, Diomande offers exactly what this Real Madrid squad craves as it chases dominance in La Liga and in Europe: flexibility and fearlessness. A winger who can operate on either flank, who runs at defenders, who plays with aggression and intent.

His versatility should give Mourinho options all across the front line, whether stretching teams out wide or rotating positions with the other stars around him. For a side already stacked with firepower, he becomes another problem opponents have to solve.

The teenager who once left the Bernabeu with Mbappe’s shirt now walks into the same stadium as a record signing, under a coach he is “prepared to die for,” in a team built to win everything.

Now the question is simple: how quickly will he turn that dream he couldn’t sleep through into nights the Bernabeu will never forget?
