Derby County Signs Alex Mowatt in Permanent Deal

Derby County have finally landed Alex Mowatt, completing a permanent deal for the West Bromwich Albion midfielder after a long pursuit.

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year contract at Pride Park for an undisclosed fee. Despite talk in the West Midlands of a £2m price tag, DerbyshireLive understands the Rams have paid closer to £600,000 for the former Barnsley captain, who was in the final year of his contract at the Hawthorns.

This is not a move made on a whim. Head coach John Eustace has had Mowatt on his list for some time and wanted him through the door as early as last summer. Derby kept watching, waiting for an opening, even after the midfielder penned a two-year extension to stay with West Brom.

That patience has now paid off.

Mowatt completed his medical and the final paperwork today, sealing a switch built on more than just availability. Derby see him as a controller, someone who can sit at the base of midfield and build attacks with the kind of calm, Championship-hardened experience their squad has been crying out for.

Doncaster-born, Mowatt has spent the last five years at the Hawthorns and arrives with a heavy bank of second-tier know-how and a pedigree at youth international level, having represented England at under-19 and under-20 level.

He has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United, where he played 73 minutes before making way for Conor Townsend. It underlines that Derby are not taking a gamble on a player short of sharpness.

Mowatt’s journey began at Leeds United, where he came through the academy and broke into the first team before moving to Barnsley. At Oakwell, he became the heartbeat of the side, captaining the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021 and racking up more than 140 appearances.

A loan spell at Oxford United followed, sharpening his game in a different environment, before he linked up with Valerien Ismaël at West Brom on a free transfer. Ismaël was effusive when Mowatt arrived at the Hawthorns, describing him as “an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality”, highlighting his threat from distance and at set-pieces, and praising his work-rate and energy.

Those traits have also been on show away from the Hawthorns. Mowatt spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them to a fourth-place finish in the Championship and reinforcing his reputation as a reliable operator at this level.

Now he walks into a Derby side with ambition and expectation swirling around it. A proven Championship organiser, a left foot that can hurt teams from range, and a leader who has worn the armband in promotion pushes – Derby have not just added another body in midfield. They have signed a player built for the battles that lie ahead.
