Derby County Secures First Victory with Quality Finish from Salvesen

Darren Robinson hailed Derby County’s response to their winless start as “a quality finish” to a tense afternoon, after Lars-Jorgen Salvesen crashed in the decisive goal against Portsmouth.

The former Rams midfielder highlighted the striker’s ruthless touch in front of goal, a moment that finally broke a stubborn contest and delivered Derby’s first victory of the season.

“It was a quality finish in the way he came on to the ball and it was a confident finish,” Robinson said, underlining just how cleanly Salvesen struck it.

Portsmouth had peppered Derby’s goal from range, letting fly repeatedly without ever really finding the precision to match their intent. The volume was there. The cutting edge was not.

“There were lots of shots from distance, particularly from Portsmouth, but they lacked that cutting edge – but you watch that finish by Salvesen,” Robinson added. “He comes on to it and he absolutely thumps it – it was still rising as it hit the back of the net.”

The timing mattered almost as much as the technique. Fratton Park had begun to snarl into life after the interval, Portsmouth feeding off a swell of noise and momentum as they pushed for a breakthrough.

“It was an important time to score because the crowd were building a bit of energy,” Robinson said. “Portsmouth had given that reaction after half-time and that really burst the bubble.”

One thunderous strike, rising all the way, and Derby’s early-season frustration suddenly has a very different feel.
