David Alaba's Future: No Retirement Plans Yet
David Alaba’s father has moved to cool talk of an early retirement, insisting the former Bayern Munich and Real Madrid star is in demand across the globe and edging closer to a decision on his future.
“He will carry on,” George Alaba told Kronen Zeitung, stressing that interest is anything but scarce. “There have been numerous enquiries. In the USA, in Europe, everywhere.”
Real Madrid chose not to extend the defender’s deal beyond the summer after a string of injuries, leaving the 34-year-old without a club and available on a free transfer. That status has turned him into one of the most intriguing veteran options on the market.
Union Berlin have been credited with a loose interest, while Mexican giants Club America have also been linked. A romantic return to Austria Vienna, the club where he grew up, is on the table as well.
The sense is that the waiting will not last much longer.
“He will announce soon what happens next. He is doing excellently,” George Alaba said. On the prospect of Austria Vienna, he added: “David has had calls. They want to, he wants to as well, but at the moment it is a little too early for him. He still has a lot he wants to do in football.”
A career built at the very top
Alaba’s next step will follow a career spent almost exclusively at the summit of European football.
Between 2008 and 2021 he was under contract at Bayern Munich, aside from a one-year loan at TSG Hoffenheim. In Munich he became a cornerstone of a dominant era: 431 competitive appearances, 33 goals, 55 assists, and two Champions League titles among a haul of domestic and international honours.
From there he joined Real Madrid, where injuries gradually reduced his role but did not stop him adding more silverware. He lifted the Champions League trophy twice again with Los Blancos, underlining his status as one of his generation’s most decorated defenders.
His last competitive club appearance came in May, in Real’s 4-2 win over Athletic Club. He then featured for Austria at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Now, with his father adamant that “it will continue”, the only question left is where Alaba chooses to write the final chapters of a career already stacked with titles – and clearly not yet finished.
