Crystal Palace Pursues Loan for Chelsea Defender Axel Disasi
Crystal Palace are pushing towards a loan deal for Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, with Sky Sports News and talkSPORT reporting that negotiations are advancing as the club scrambles to plug a major gap at the heart of their defence.
Disasi, 28, has been frozen out at Stamford Bridge since January 2025. He was moved into Chelsea’s so‑called “bomb squad” and spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham United, where he rebuilt some rhythm but not his long-term future in west London. Now, another route back into the Premier League spotlight is opening.
Palace’s urgency is clear. Maxence Lacroix’s £52m move to Chelsea ripped out the core of their back line, and new boss Sage has wasted no time identifying what he wants to replace it: experience, authority, and a voice that can drag a back four into line when the pressure rises.
Press Conference
At his Thursday press conference, Sage didn’t bother hiding the scale of the need.
"Yes. We need a player in this department, a player with a lot of games, if possible, in the Premier League. We need players, but we need a leader and that's why we need to wait a little bit to find a good one," he said, underlining that this is not just about numbers, but personality.
The links to Disasi were inevitable once Lacroix crossed the capital. A ready-made, physically imposing centre-back with Premier League minutes and European pedigree, currently surplus to requirements at a club reshaping its squad yet again. The fit is obvious, even if the deal is not done.
Sage, though, stayed on the right side of the line when asked directly about the Chelsea defender.
"He's a player from Chelsea, it's difficult for me to speak about a player of another club, but I hear the same noise as you," he admitted, acknowledging the growing speculation without stepping into dangerous territory.
Palace have moved quickly in the market before and are doing so again, hunting a defender who can walk straight into the team and take charge. If they land Disasi, they don’t just replace Lacroix’s position on the teamsheet. They send a message that the defensive spine of this new era under Sage will not be built on potential alone.
