Cristiano Ronaldo's Role in Al-Nassr's Potential Takeover

Cristiano Ronaldo is at the heart of a takeover story that could rewrite Al-Nassr’s future.

Portuguese outlet “A Bola” reports that a five-man investment consortium is preparing an official bid to buy the Saudi club from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) – and Ronaldo is not just a symbol of the project, he is part of it.

Ronaldo steps from captain to potential co-owner

The proposed group is as eye-catching as it is unexpected. Alongside Ronaldo stands Gerry Cardinale, the American chief executive of RedBird Capital and owner of Italian giants Milan, joined by Saudi businessmen Ibrahim Al-Muhaidib, Mohammed Al-Khereiji and Sharaf Al-Hariri.

Ronaldo has been Al-Nassr’s defining figure since his arrival in the Saudi league, driving the team on the pitch and transforming its profile off it. This move would take that bond to another level. If the deal goes through, he would not only wear the armband. He would help own the badge.

The plan, according to “A Bola”, would give the Portuguese star a stronger voice in shaping Al-Nassr’s long-term direction – from sporting strategy to the club’s broader vision in a rapidly changing Saudi football landscape.

A $500 million play for control

The numbers underline the scale of the ambition. The report states that each of the five investors is expected to commit around 100 million dollars, putting a combined 500 million dollars on the table to support both the takeover and the club’s future development.

Cardinale’s presence adds heavyweight experience from the global sports business. Through RedBird and Milan, he has already navigated the demands of running elite football operations and major investments. Alongside him, Al-Muhaidib, Al-Khereiji and Al-Hariri bring financial clout from within Saudi Arabia and a direct connection to the local sports market and its rapid expansion.

This is not a quiet reshuffle behind closed doors. It is a bid designed to reshape Al-Nassr’s ownership model and push the club into a new competitive and commercial tier.

PIF meeting will make or break the bid

All of it now hinges on one crucial stage. The Portuguese report says representatives of RedBird and the wider consortium are preparing to sit down with officials from the Public Investment Fund in the coming period to discuss the proposal.

That meeting will define everything.

PIF, which currently holds a controlling stake in Al-Nassr, holds the key. A green light would clear the way for ownership to pass into the hands of the Ronaldo-fronted group. A refusal would shut the door and stall one of the most intriguing takeover moves in Saudi football.

The timing is striking. Al-Nassr are already entering a new chapter on the pitch and in the boardroom, with the Saudi league pushing hard to grow its global reach. Any change at the top now would not just tweak the club’s path; it could redraw it.

Turn these negotiations into a signed agreement and this deal would stand among the biggest in Saudi football history – not only because of the money involved, but because the club’s captain is trying to step into the boardroom of the team he leads.
